I use an American Deluxe Jazz 5 string. It is a great bass and I love it but the 34'' scale often brings a weak or flabby sounding B string. I found that using a taperwound B string and stringing through the body helps give it better tention, tone, and volume, it really makes it a better string. I bought a very expensive set of DR Longnecks after using La bella Hard Rockin Steels just for the sake of trying something different. They have a great tone and feel but fret out pretty badly from the 12th fret and above. I play with a considerably low action but never had a problem with the stock Fender 8250 5M's or the La Bella's. Has anyone using the DR Longnecks had this problem of insane fret buzz? They are a great string and I like the sound but even after a pro set up my saddles are up much higher than I am comfortable with and I am still hearing a good deal of fret buzz. I am a 20 year vet standing behind basses. I just want to make sure that other players have experienced this problem before I come to conclusions, and after paying $40 for the set I would like to use them as long as I can. Thanks for the help friends!

The DR longnecks are designed for a 35" scale or above. Try DR low riders, they are slightly higher tension than many strings, which should yield a good B string.

One other factor contributing to the buzz might be the nut. Anytime you switch brands you should insure that the strings are properly supported at the nut, as string gauges vary, especially on the low b. It's also important to wind the strings properly so that you have sufficient down-angle from the nut to the tuner. I have a 5-string Am Dlx with the five tuners in a row and I can tell that winding that B string on the tuner is an art, but it can be done.

I use DRs and love them. To me, they have a fuller range of tone than the Fenders (which I do like) but at the same time seem a little more pliant.

DR are greats, long necks are for the 35" scale tho - as anubis had said, that could be the reason why it's flappy for your Fender. I use DR strings also, but hibeams, tuned to D. So everything tuned 1 step down. No issues for me.
