Would you rather have a brand new 08 Corvette or a 63 Stingray. If I'm in a race, I want the new technology. If I'm going for a Sunday drive, I want the vintage car. I don't record or play in a band so I like my Sunday driver.

So, by this logic, you're saying that if one is not a professional player, one should overpay for equal or even diminished performance?

I don't understand why anyone should do that in any situation... unless, of course, you're talking about proving to the neighbors that you can afford to throw away your money.

The vintage market is a seller's market: if you're a seller, you can make a lot money. If you're a buyer, you can lose a lot of money. That makes vintage collecting akin to a game of three-card monte.

BTW, the difference in styling between a new Corvette and a '63 are obvious. The differences between a '62 Jazz and a current reissue? Looks like the same object to me.

I guess a lot of people just enjoy older things. Bit like Vinyl or Kodachrome. In some cases I suppose you can't apply the analogy but so much of this stuff is subjective.

Some players complain that Fenders today are inconsistent in their build quality and prefer vintage instruments but it works both ways I've heard complaints about expensive vintage instruments, you can't win

To say you prefer vintage instruments because current production is inconsistent is like saying you prefer grapefruit because oranges are so sour.

Jim, true it is. My '87 MIJ can be called a classic I guess, that's why I upgraded her with newer technology. Someone had mentioned too, that ebay stuff are pretty suspect for vintage, it could be utterly '60s crap, not vintage, bad condition crap from the '60s to be more like it.

BTW, I'm a Vette guy, if you like the Split Window as a Sunday driver, you'd better be careful, not many people can drive a fast car - by today's standard the '63 (or any midyear Vette, esp big blocks) are still fast, and unless it's a '65 or later with disc brakes - but you will have a hard time slowing down let alone stop with those 4 wheel drum brakes  Nice car either way tho
