I was always a P-Bass player but I bought a 1969 blonde jazz bass recently & It sounded great. Near Mint rare translucent blonde over ash with rosewood block pearloid inlays. Too nice to play out. So I purchased a decent MIM to take around & not worry about a ding or dent. It doesn't have the same sound as the '69 lacks the punch. The '69 was a closet case so I don't think the guy touched it. I think it was bought the guy took a few lessons & then it just sat. Any ideas if custom shop pickups would make a difference or an old set (guys ask crazy money for vintage parts). Any input appreciated for a relatively new Jazz player.

A set of CS '62 pickups should perk up your MIM bass. It won't sound the same as your '69 but it will definitely sound better.

Thanks! I was always a P Bass player & still have a custom color white 1966 & a recent MIM. I guess I never gave a Jazz a chance but this '69 Blonde is a keeper as much as my '66 P. Different fell but plays great & the sound is different too. Rare Custom blonde see through finish & the bound rosewood board with the pearloid blocks is a great look too! My MIM P Bass sounded as good as my '66 so I expected the same from an MIM Jazz but it's just not the same.

Curiousity killed the cat... why buy a bass that is too nice to play out? If I bought a musical instrument as a financial investment, thats one thing. But I thought most bass players dream of owning a classic instrument so they could play it everywhere, because the sound was that awesome. Then to purchase a MIM, in the hopes of modding it to sound like the 69 Bass (which you own), isn't that just torture? To put it in perspective, when I did not own a Fender, I tried to get other instruments that had that "fender sound". Many instrument descriptions claimed to have the "Fender sound". After months of research, I did the practical thing: I got a Fender. I treated it as "the good china, that only comes out on special occasions" until I realized I never played it. Now I take it everywhere and play it all the time. Before, I merely worshiped my Fender, now I am one with my Fender and getting closer everyday.

Yeah, I see where you are coming from. The bass will not just sit in it's case. My '66 P bass does not either. These will be my major practice basses. I play at home much more than I play out. We don't do clubs. A few friends & I get together maybe once a week, if were lucky. We play parties & maybe one paid gig every few months. I was in working band in the early 1980's but couldn't pay the bills Sorry to say. So with a deamnding days job most of my playing time is at home. So at home I play them so much more & my MIMs stay in their gig bags 6 out of seven days a week.

3 suggestions.
1. Contact someone like Curtis Novak or Lindy Fralin who custom make pickups and tell them you want a 1969 sounding set to fit on the MIM. They know exactly what winding and pole setup you will need. Sure off the shelf pickups might get in the ballpark for less, but you'll get much closer with a custom set.
2. Replace the tone capacitor (or both if it has two) with a ceramic disc of the same value as in your '69. They may be putting ceramic discs in the newer MIM's for all I know, but make sure it has the same ceramic disc cap arrangement as the '69. You can get caps that performs the same way as Fenders at a radio/tv shop. Fender changed the cap set up and wiring on the Jazz around periodically, so you could have 1 or 2 caps to get the same set up as in your '69. The caps from a radio TV shop should run about $2 tops and at $3 they'd be overcharging you. With replicated custom '69 pickups, ceramic caps and same control wiring setup as in your '69 then any difference you hear will be in the wood. Could be a little difference, could be a lot.
3. Do not buy a current production model, instead get an older model MIM with an alder body. I've heard they are making them with with basswood now, but no longer list what wood they are using on the SPEC sheet therefore current production models have MYSTERY wood bodies. They still spec the neck as maple. A 2008 back would be alder for sure except for a few FSR ash models.
