Some Japanese made basses have plastic bobbins on their pickups, but there is no way of knowing if the pickups were ever changed in your bass, unless they have cloth insulation on the wiring. That is a sure sign that someone modified a Japanese Fender bass.

American pickups will always have fiber bobbins (cardboard) and they are often coated in lacquer. All of the cloth wire pickups are after market, unless the bass is an actual Vintage reissue or a real early 60's Fender bass. The real cloth wiring stopped in 1967-68.
