Hi,

I intend to buy an American Deluxe Jazz Bass® V (Five String), but as I have some back problems the weight of this bass would be very important to me. I contacted Fender but their answer was that "we don't weight our instruments".

So, if you have it and you could check its weight & let me know, I would be grateful.
Thanks!

The weight of someone else's Jazz bass is no real indication of how much yours will weigh.

The body weight of every bass model varies with the individual bass and the pieces of wood that were used to build it.

Know that if you order an ash body, it is likely to be heavy. Sometimes very heavy.

BCbassman,

Thank you for your input.
To be frank, I didn't expect such info. I hoped that I'll get something more concrete...
If I would know that it won't pass (let's say) 4Kg that would be encouraging...

I would suggest ordering a bass with an alder body, not ash. It will still sound great and likely be a much lighter bass but individual basses will have some variance in weight.

The other option is to order a used one from a shop or seller who will weigh the bass for you.

It can't hurt to ask a seller to weigh a bass.

I would do it if I had a bass to sell.
Good luck with your purchase.

A few online dealers will weigh the individual instruments and list the weight. Sweetwater.com does this and when they were carrying the new Am Deluxe Jazz fivers (they're sold out currently) as I recall they were all in the 9.5 to 10.5 lb range. But yeah each piece of wood is different so even though they're all cut from the same CNC machine some will be heavier/lighter than others.

This isn't much help but what the heck; i weighed my Fender 24 5 string and it is definitely heavier than the Deluxe V that you're asking about.
The 24 weighs 9.6 lbs. / 4.36 kgs. In my honest opinion, i would be willing to bet they weigh from the mid to upper 8 lbs. / 3.86-4.09 kgs.

Now to talk about backs; I've been under the knife once (98) and had 2 procedures: microdesectomy @ S1-L5 and decompression@ L4-L5...now for the good part (LOL) in 2005 was diagnosed with S1-L5 and L5-L4 both need to be removed and Bi-level fusion preformed, and the rest.....

FINDINGS: The lumbar vertebral bodies maintain normal height, alignment, and marrow signal intensity. There is moderate disc desiccation with significant loss of disc space at L4-L5 level.

At L5-S1 level, discogenic endplate marrow signal changes are seen on the side of L4-5 disc space. Distal portion of the cord terminates at L1 level without pathological signal change. Small marginal osteophytes are seen arising from all lumbar vertebral segments.

At T12-L1 level, there is no focal disc herniation, lateralizing disc bulge or canal stenosis.

At L1-L2 level, there is small focal posterocentral and right paracentral disc herniation causing mild-to-moderate indentation of the thecal sac with generalized disc bulge and bilateral foraminal narrowing with bilateral moderate facet arthritis.

At L2-L3 level there is mild generalized disc bulge and bilateral mild neural foraminal narrowing but there is no focal canal stenosis is seen.

At L3-L4 level, there is mild generalized disc bulge with bilateral mild neural foraminal narrowing with bilateral mild facet arthritis. There is no focal central canal stenosis seen.

At L4-L5 level, there is a moderate-to-large posterocentral and right paracentral and right foraminal disc herniation causing severe right neural foraminal stenosis. Moderate central canal stenosis and mild neural foraminal narrowing with bilateral facet arthritis is seen.
At L5-S1 level, there is focal biforaminal disc herniation worse on the left side with bilateral facet arthritis and lateral recess stenosis. There is a history of focal laminectomy defect from the left side at L5-S1.

IMPRESSION: MRI of the lumbar spine demonstrates:
1. Moderate-to large posterocentral and right paracentral disc herniation extending toward the right neural foramen causing severe right neural foramen and mild left neural foraminal narrowing. Bilateral facet arthritis is seen with moderate central canal stenosis at L4-L5 level.
2. Small focal recurrent biforaminal disc herniation worse on the left side is noted at L5-S1 level with a small focal old left laminectomy defect.
3. Moderate generalized disc bulge with bilateral neural foraminal narrowing at L2-3 and L3-4 levels.
4. Small focal posterocentral and right paracentral disc herniation at L1-L2 level. Degenerative disc disease is seen. See comments above.

I just love their closing sentence LOL

We thank you for your business and look forward to serving you in the future.

Sincerely, XXXXXXXXXX

BTW: I told them "No Thank You" about going back under the knife, i will be careful with what i can do, i know my limits and i will stay away from surgery until it is either absolutely 'beyond a doubt' necessary OR to late and i become paralyzed. It's a choice that i accept.

Why 'Thank You' Zoltans, as you can see I've been dealing with this a long, long time; the original accident happened in 86-87, i did carpentry work back then and a wall fell on me, i lasted approx. 10 years before needing surgery, so i did pretty darn good (pure luck) as far as time went.
I can't believe i found a rendering of the exact procedure(s) they want to do on me.
Image

Plus they want to "work on" 3 other discs...now how many lumbar discs are there anyway?!?!?! :?  (there's 6 lumbar discs total)
They're allowing me to have the honor of 'not touching' T12-L1.

Mods, i'm done with posting off topic of this magnitude, this is a one time deal just for an example of "Bad backs and Basses". Thank you i appreciate everyone's patience.

Franny57,

Comparing to your situation, I have no problem...
As you have a sense of humor and you're still playin' bass,
I think you manage quite well your situation.

Keep the faith! :)
