Here is a review of the new Fender American Special Basses by Tom Foster (Harmony Central Contributer). I found this nice review on Musicians Friend.

It appears that the American Specials are a bit more expensive than the Highway 1s.

Highway one $799
American Special Jazz bass $879 (what I paid new 2011 model 3 weeks ago)
$80 difference.

I went with the American Special Jazz over the American Standard because I already had a nice case and the American Special cost me $879 vs. $1250 for the American Standard.

Beautiful Bass fjbass! Wow, you hadn't even peeled the protective plastic off the pickups and pickguard yet before you took the photo.

This was before I put a BabicZ Full Contact bridge on it.

Not a very good photo. I need to take another one but here it is with the BabicZ bridge. I had a piece of foam under the strings to tame the crappy Fender strings. Now I have DR Black Beauties (Black coated DR High Beams Stainless) and have no need for the foam. Love them BTW. Not only do they look good against the white with black pickguard but they feel and sound good too.

The store mgr. cut some off the price, gave me a bit of a break. Not as good as you did however.

You have a very good bass though. Came with the best tuners, very nice bridge (string though the body) and a very nice plush lined case. I had a case that is a padded semi hardshell ($65). I traded 3 Squier Classic Vibe basses and $302 cash just to get what I did. Then later when I got the cash I put a heavier bridge on it. I was going to get the exact bridge you have on your bass for $79 and even considered installing the string ferroles (as I did on 3 other basses using a drill press) then I ran across this bridge for a little less at wholesale cost so I thought I would try it for that price. It is very nice but only top loader.

That is a good looking bridge. Your bass looks super with it. A good choice. A lot of good bridges out there that are top string only. I had a Squier Precision that was strung through the body. It had a Humbucker on it. A good solid bass.
The guys call me Mr. Nylon, cause I'm always putting D'addario Nylon Tapewound strings on board. The nylons were sold out at the store when I picked this one up. I like the Fender .045, .065, .085, .110TW on it until the nylons go on.

So what sound do you get from Nylon Tapewounds? More of a thud then flats or something different? I have not had the chance to hear them or play them.

It's not a thud. It's more of a bottom sound with no ringing to it.

Is it similar to putting a piece of foam under the strings right next to the bridge???

Thanks. I use foam because it can be quickly removed if I get the urge to play rounds with the piano type ring. So, exactly what brand (mfr #) are your strings? Also, how much are they?

D'Addario ETB92 Nylon Tapewound (.50 .65 .85 .105) The gauges of the strings fit most stock cut nuts too. No messing with bridge saddles for most also. The one thing, $32.00 a set. They do last a long time. Contaminants don't get into the strings to deaden them. I string through the body with no trouble.

Thanks!!! I like that gauge with .50 for the G. A fuller bass tone for me but haven't been able to find it in a string I liked. Last used in Elixer's which I didn't care for the tone but loved the fullness and even tone from .50-.105's
I will try your suggested string out when able.

If you do try them, I hope they are to you're liking. With the new bridge on your Spl., they should give you the sounds you like. I only go down to .105 on the E string, from .110 gauge size. But up from .45 to .50 on the G. So close.

Thanks, I tried .110's on time and they felt like "Elevator cables" to me ;)

A lot of people prefer the vintage bent metal bridges over the high mass ones. I'm one, I much prefer the tone I get from them, and I know there are plenty more like me. The very fact that the American Specials have the vintage bridges has me thinking I might eventually get one over an American Standard..

Get the Am. Standard and swap on a vintage bridge, then sell the HMV bridge. JMO

You would have to find a "vintage bridge" with string through the body option. Possibly order a 2004 MIA Jazz bridge.

eh.....it felt kinda cheap to me and the socalled "Grease Bucket" circuit did absolutely nothing for me,however I did like the rosewood fretboard...but I wouldn't pay the $900.00 bucks that it's priced at.
