Recently borrowed a Jazz off a friend as a loaner while i was away from my own non Fender basses.
It was one of the nicest basses that i have played in a long while, Natural colour, B/W/B pic guard P-J pick up configuration, the P in the neck position was routed and installed by the current owner, nice job an sounds great! its just the fitting of the Precision neck that gets me on how it was done ?
For me its the perfect Fender set up got the Jazz body that i prefer with the wider neck that suites my playing style better.
My question is i would of thought that the neck pockets would be different for each model so swapping necks about would involve some modification to the pockets.
I can only guess if you were to do that (Jazz body-Precision neck) that you might have to modify the pocket but to do it the other way around (Precision body-Jazz neck) that the neck pocket would be to big to start with ?
Or are they straight forward interchangeable ?
Thanks in advance,
Dan.

Tim Commerford uses Fender Jazzes with Precision necks:

I saw a couple of pics showing Jaco Pastorius playing his '62 Jazz Bass with a fretted maple P-Bass neck on the Internet a couple of years ago:

Fender bass neck pockets use standardized-and-identical dimensions and both the Jazz Bass and the Precision Bass use a 34-inch scale. You should have no problems building a "mix and match" instrument.

I swapped necks between my Jazz Bass and Precision Bass back in the 70's. It is a very easy thing to do with the neck pockets being the same dimensions.

The precision neck sounded very good on the Jazz bass body.

This may be harder to do on newer Fender basses. I don't know. I haven't tried it on a post 1995 bass.

That is the year that Fender started using graphite rods in their necks and they changed their truss rod design.

There is nothing to it. You just unbolt the necks and swap them. You may risk chipping off some of the body finish near the neck pocket, but if you are careful, you should be able to do it without harming the finish.
Having a Jazz neck on a Precision Bass is cool too. Often times, when you do this, you may find that the body neck match-ups are more favorable and sound better/ feel better/ the weight distribution is better etc. and you will want to keep your instruments that way.

Good Luck with it.

Its got me sold after trying one !
Its like having the best of both worlds, no neck dive with the added bonus of the wider neck (been playing Stingrays forever so its a good match to that) and the one that i was loaned had the "P" style pickup in the neck position so double bonus!.
Still be nice to have one of each in stock, standard form as well though ! :P
