I have a 98-99 American Deluxe Jazz bass and was wondering why it has only 1 9 volt battery and averything I read says there are a 18 volt system. And why some people say the pick-ups are active while others say they are not and that the power is just for the equilizer. I would love someone to shed some light on the subject for me.

I have had 2 Deluxe MIA Jazzbasses and the first one (the pick-ups where the type with 4 poles not 8) had also one 9 Volt battery, the second one I had (pick-ups with 8 pole pieces) had the 18 Volts system. Sorry, I can't remember their exact dates....

Well, the only active pickups are EMG, and now they also make the passive pickups - HZ models. So technically people telling you that the battery is for the eq is correct. But for simplicity, active pups most of the time refer to the active electronic - pan/boost...etc. Other than that I can't tell you when Fender went 18v, IIRC 2007 - can anyone confirm this?

The 18V power supply has been introduced in late 2001/early 2002. This change coincided with the introduction of the 5-bolt neck attachment and the 4+1 tuner configuration on five-string models.

These single-pole pickups were designed by John Suhr.
