I just got my 2010 American jazz about two months ago and I LOVE it. its great, but im having a problem getting the nice country tone im looking for. It may be my amp settings or something? Im not sure, i would greatly appreicate any help. I run my bass through a Hartke LH500 with a 4x10 and a 14". I also run it through a boss compression and chorus pedal. Hope you can help!

Might it be that maybe you're seeking a P-bass tone?

What kind of strings do you have? Most country players would likely be using some kind of flatwounds.

Very interesting.... :D

I play and love Country music too and to this end, I bought an 2010 American Standard 'P' and re-strung it with La Bella F/S flats.

Then (back-to-front as usual), I did some research and saw that just about everyone I was seeking to emulate (from Kenny R' through to Charlie Pride via the Eagles) uses a bloody 'J'......!!!

I'd love to get to the bottom of this..... Is it just to 'cut through the mix', or what??

I think I've pretty much got the sound I want with my 'P' now (and I have to say that getting a new Bergantino cab was 85% of it), but there's still a big part of me that wants a Standard Jazz bass, like just about every other 'Country' bassist seems to use!!

Maybe some La Bellas might do the trick for you...?? :?:

P or J, it doesn't really matter, they both work. I'm not a big country fan, but I've seen quite a number of country acts on TV, and the ones I've seen all use Precisions. It's six of one, half a dozen of the other. Use whatever works for you.

I use a Jazz for rock and country (2 bands). I have Steve Harris Rotosounds; they were the only flats I could find with a .110 gauge E string. I find that they are awesome, for rock my tone is all the way up. For country, it's probably about 50%. I use the same head for both: Gallien-Krueger 700RBii. The cabs are: 210 for country, 215 for rock.
Seems to work for me.

I can duplicate the sound of a P-Bass with my J-Bass by setting the mid range equalizer controls on the amp to no higher than mid range. Set compression to minimum. If your amp has a 'room balance' or 'ambience' control, set it to 'deep'. Once the amp controls are set, use the guitar controls to fine tune the sound to what you want.

Best of luck with your setup.
