Get new (different) strings.

Welcome to the Fender family! I think the sound you have described is from new strings. New strings sound fresh and crisp and can also be too bright and have a lot of hand noise as you play up and down the neck. Most roundwound sets are like this until you break them in, then they start to sound warmer and more full sounding. If you don't want to buy a set of strings and would rather just break them in ( bass strings are expensive) you can adjust the tone knob on your bass. Another option if you don't like the way the first option sounds is to get your self some flat wounds. Back in the 50's through most of the 60's, that big Fender bass sound came from flatwound strings. Flat wounds don't sound as bright and have a really warm sound. You are some what limited to what you can do with flats for example slapping. If you are a player who likes to play slap bass, it is next to immpossible to do it with flats. Any way try these options. See if that dosn't help you out.

+1 to all the above.

I'm also of the opinion that turning down the tone knob will bring your bottom into play as well as eliminating the high settings on your amp. A lot of the time I turn off everything but my bass knob, which I have all the way up.

One more idea is to mute your strings with a piece of soft foam, or rolled up felt, up against the bridge. this will take the twang and tinny away quite a bit and it's an easy fix.

it'll also depend on what kind of strings you're using... if you fancy those old school records they often use flatwounds, and most people nowadays use nickel rounds or SS rounds..

Sell the bass and buy a new one without that problem.

Always cut right to the heart of the matter. Short and sweet. Good advice.

A picture would have been nice.
