Get this fellow thump-meisters,

I just recently added a "new" mexican Jazz Bass to my collection of guitars. Only there's something unique about this one. Though I thought it would be anther mediocre sounding Mexican made J-bass, it's the best sounding bass I now own, better than my other, newer (2008 i think) J-bass, and my Epiphone SG Bass.

Also, its the only bass that i have that will feedback with no effects on it whatsoever. These pick-ups are hot as hell it seems. I've checked the serial number and I believe its from '92 or somewhere from the early 90's. Anyone got an explanation? I actually did open her up and saw that the pots were smaller than my newer J-bass. Could this have anything to do with it?

No.

My guess is that, if it's really that much hotter, the pickups were changed out at some point. It's been around for a while.

It could also be something as simple as the pickups being adjusted much higher than you're used to. The closer to the strings, hotter the signal.

Well I know that. The pickups are actually set lower than the ones I'm used to. I'm guessing that the pick-ups were switched out. But in terms of the pick-up height, if they were any higher I think my cabinet would be in danger. hahaha
