I have been having a problem with a grounding hum on my instrument. I took it to an authorized tech who acknowledged the problem and grounded everything on the interior of the bass. I am still getting a grounding hum. It does not happen all the time. Certain places I play it is fine but at home or where I rehearse it occurs. I took it to another tech last week who acknowledged the problem but could not come up with a solution. Please help.

Welcome!

It could be so many things. Notwithstanding, what I would do is, when the bass is plugged in and NOT acting up, I'd open up the electronics cavity and try to make it act up by probing around with my fingers.

Your bass' circuit has several wire splicings as part of the OEM wiring. I'd start pinching those splices first and then I'd keep going, gently agitating each and every wire, terminal and component. Sooner or later, you will zero in on where it is coming from and once this is accomplished, you can correct the root cause.

And no, 18V will not hurt you.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. It is appreciated. It is almost as if there is some oscillation coming from the pickups. I am getting so frustrated at this point that I may just rip everything out.

Glad to (kind of) help.

Stuff like this surely can be exasperating.
