I am thinking about buying a used MIM Active Jazz Bass from 2003...

I am wondering about the neck though - is it significantly thinner than a P bass neck? I have been reading mixed info. on this online and cant seem to find a definite answer. Some say its a P neck and J bass body? Is that true??

Any info any bassists have would be great! Thanks!!!

Hey, I am by no means an expert on this but I'm looking at a Mark Hoppus Signature bass and the same is true with it. The Hoppus Bass has a jazz body and a PB neck but to my hands this PB neck feels thinner.

I've got a MiM Deluxe Active Jazz bass and the neck is definitely a Jazz neck at 1.5" for the nut.

Can't speak for the M-H bass, as I don't like it at all and never even touched one.

Now - if we are talkin' the Reggie Hamilton - then I know that one fer sure! It's also the same 1.5" neck!
I'm waiting to get it from GC soon!

This (^) will get a TORT PG as soon as I get it in the door to match the twins:::

Hey guys, Yea I think I have rulled out the M H Bass for myself, (because of it having the PB neck). The thing that I do like about it is the way the strings thread through the body... It's just me and I have no facts to justify it but it seems that a setup like that would tend to stay in tune better, and possibly have a little richer tone. I also like the pickups on the M H setup.
I am totaly new to the bass, I played the drums a very little back in 69/70/71 but hurt my back in 04 and am dissabled, & 56! So I can't go back to that.
I decided that taking up an instrument would be a good way to rehab my mind, and I AM a rythum loving man.
I now find myself in the position of having resurched the "what bass to buy" question to death and need to just go out and buy one and get started with a few lessons.
Back in the mid seventies I worked with a few local bands helping with sound and have played a friends Rickenbacker some. I know I want a Fender Jazz bass but whitch one???
I would really appreachate any and all input as I don't won't to buy a worthless Bass but I don't need a top of the line bass eather. I just need to get started practicing.
I love the blues, jazz, rock,... what to do?

I'd say that you should not just 'go buy a bass'. You've got to PLAY it for at least 1/2 hour to see if it forms a Vulcan Mind-Meld with you and can become an integral part of your body.

Play a lot of different basses - not just one style or logo. Fenders are of course, the icon-riche bass that most players either love or hate but there appears to be no middle ground.

I had a love/hate affair with my first Fender Precision and refused to play it for 13+ years. it sat in my closet and as a closet queen it aged nicely and one day I took it out and said that it had to have some sort of redeeming qualities and I took to it in earnest.

It now is a front-singer in my bass choir, but it took a professional bassist to show me how to get it to sing first. My group contains some Squiers (great basses, especially the VM-Jaguar!) and a few Fenders (the Deluxe Jazz is one fine instrument!) and even a pair of Ibanezessesses.

No-way would I trade, sell or otherwise give up any of them.

You have to play them with an eye toward paying for it and owning it for a long time - so don't just accept a lower grade that you might just try out and decide of you really want to play bass. Either the fire's in your veins or it isn't.

A good bass is expensive, but a poor bass costs more, since time and money are inversely proportionate. Know what I mean? .

Oh I compleatly agree with what you had to say.
I spent a few hours in a little music shop near my house the other day and played around with everything they had (used) and I found one I really like the feel of, the weight and balance is good, the neck is wonderful and I was impressed with the overall tone of the instrument. It's an 80's Ibanez that is no longer in production. Havent bought it yet but it's a strong contender.
What I want (and will eventually end up with) is a Fender VM Jass or Deluxe Jazz but money is a problem for the moment and I want to get started ASAP.

Thanks for your input.

Hey Mike! I have a Mark Hoppus sig, I really like it! It's kind of a one trick pony, but it certainly does the job. I was hesitant at first, but one I played it for a few minutes it really grew on me, and I have used it live quite a bit. My regular soundman really likes the tone of it, as do I, and I love the uniqueness of the Jazz body with the P pup and neck. If you can score a used one, I don't think you would regret it (depending on your tone requirements of course) I think that the neck is the same as the standard P bass, but the modern P bass neck isn't quite as wide as the older P basses I believe...
