Hi,

I own a 1978 Jazz Bass, solid ash with natural finish, in perfect condition, with all original hardware and accessories (including the pickup cover and ashtray, Fender case, and manuals which look like they haven't been read). This bass looks like it's barely been touched since it left the factory. No fret wear, no dings, nothing.

I've seen '78 Js sell at auction for $1800-$3300, but all of these had some repair or original part missing/replaced (e.g., frets, case, etc).

Does anyone know the value of one that's in mint condition?

Cheers,
doonyakka

I spent several hours Googling before posting in here, and found nothing that answered my specific question.

A 78 Jazz in truly mint condition will attract a lot of attention.

Anything that you have to prove provenance (chain of ownership) and the the original manuals, receipts, etc. will be useful in bolstering your claim of originality.

The bass should sell for more that a beat-up or used '78 Jazz bass, but sometimes that does not happen. A used and played bass may have its own attraction factor working for it, in that it is broken in and may feel better to players.

This is a down time in the economy, but people who want certain guitars or basses seem to come up with the money when the opportunity presents itself.

Good luck selling it. I would estimate the value to be between $2400 and $3000 USD, but times may dictate that it sell for less.
