Am in the market for a new Fender bass amp. The ones I'm looking at (Rumbles) feature a variety of sizes. I've always used 15" but was wondering what other players think about the 12" and 10" size. I am interested in a full sound (somewhere between Jamerson and Jaco). As I play fretless exclusively, I am not interested in a slap sound.

Any opinions?

What price range are you shopping? If you're going for a single speaker and want to stay under $300.00, the Rumble 75 is a very nice amp. Another alternative is Acoustic, they make some sweet amps too, Jaco liked them.

I'm using a Kustom which is almost identical to the Acoustic, it will be easier to find Acoustics to compare to than the kustoms, I bought mine sight unseen based on playing Acoustics.

Good luck.

I am mostly considering the Rumble 150 and 450, although opinions on the various speaker sizes are welcome. I am trying to stay under $500. An amp in the 150 - 200w range is more than enough for the gigs I do.

I have a Rumble 60 that I bought to play some very small rooms with. I'm always surprised just how well it performs. I've played the Rumble 350 with 2 10's, it was a beast. No matter which way you go you'll be happy.

15 sounds tight and with a big rumbling bottom... I'd go with the 12's...

I played through 2-15's for years but recently tried out a 4-10 cab and was hooked. Moves alot of air and that's what it's all about ain't it?

I've played thru 10's for over 20 yrs now. They're tight enough to bring out the high's and provide the speaker surface to move the air to bring the low's growl. IMO with 15's you lose the clarity a bit and they tend to get flappy. I've used 12's in the studio, but never live.

Good point about the 15s being sloppy.

I'm playing a Littlemark into a Berg' NV 412 and for me, it's the absolute Holy Grail!!!

No effects; straight in.

Everything I ever wanted and so much more.

For stage work, I'm currently using a Fender Bassman 250-210 ( 2 - 10 inch Eminence speakers ). I used to use a Bassman 250-115 and frankly, the 2-10 inch speakers out perform the single 15 in my applications with the controls set identically on both amps. We monitored the sound pressure level (db) at 12 feet between both amps and the two 10's were consistently higher across the frequency spectrum range of a P-bass than a single 15.

If you think about it, the cone surface area of a single 15 is just a little bit less than the combined cone surface area on two 10's. Two tens just move a little more air than a single 15 and relative sound pressure level is an important factor when comparing sound output of different diameter speakers in the same model series from the same manufacturer.

15s would give you that rumble, adding at least a 210 cab would be great - gives you a little of the highs. I've never played any 12s, just guitar guys. I've always have/had 15s with me live, but always have 10s to compensate for the highs. 12s seems to be envouge the last few years. I've yet to try it. Good luck, keep us posted with whatever your decision is.

For sure, you see a lot more of the 12s out there now for sale, coming from boutiques brands still...the middle of the road brand still pushing 10s and 15s. I would like to try out the 12s, maybe it's time to go to GC to see if they have one and try it out.

GC doesn't carry Genz Benz (which is too bad because they're some of the best amps out there right now) but if you're looking for 12" check out the Genz Benz Neo 212 cabs. Good stuff.

Yes 12's are coming back. I have an SWR Bigfoot that has 2 12'' Bagend drivers. I also have a Carvin 15'', a 2x10" and an SWR Goliath 4x10''. I like all of them lol. For moving air I use the 4x10 with the 15''. BTW I have a Demeter tube pre amp with a Yamaha P5000S power amp. I don't biamp and I still get 750 watts per channel. It makes my drummer poop his shorts quite frankly. He's a drummer so he doesn't mind the poop, lol. For rehearsals or quiet situations I just use the 2x12. It has better low end then the Carvin 2x10 and the punch is still there.

I take it back MM, I did try it here @ my local music store in GB...Light weight is the key with these Genz Benz stacks isn't it...to have the money to burn on... :|
