Going to be getting a 5 string bass soon, but can't decide between the American Standard and the Standard 5 string.

Price is the issue here, so I guess what I'm asking is, is there a reason I should get the American standard over the cheaper Standard 5 string?

The simple answer is that you should always spend the most you're comfortable with spending. There is no substitute for quality and especially with Fender the more you spend the better the instrument.

You might consider getting a fretted one and having the frets yanked. That's what I have and I love it. This route gives you more options as the fretless choices with Fender are limited, especially with 5-strings.

try it all of them out for yourself. Price mean jack if the one you end up trying and being comfortable with is the MIM 5er. For all you know you might like the Squier Deluxe V Jazz Bass - I did. Fretted or fretless, same as what I've suggested before, it's all up to you. I've had over 30 basses in 20+ yrs of playing, all sorts, I've always ended up with Fender for some reason. Are they the best? Feel, attachment, it seems that way for me. I've owned a bunch of different Fenders in those yrs, the ones I have now are the ones I like the best, not going to sell them (for now). None are MIAs. I've sold the MIAs with out hesitation when it came down to it. My MIJ is actually the best quality Fender that I have ever own - even compared to the 90 and 94 MIAs that I've sold. My Stu Hamm (series I short scale) was really a great bass too (sold).

So go out there and try both back to back, try out other basses. The most comfortable for you in feel and price might not even be a Fender.

for a 5 stringer.. a modded Standard Jazz Bass would be enough... the neck radius is the same for both the american and mexican version... durability wise, go for the americans, however if you prefer a cheaper alternate yet a good tone... a well modded mex should serve you well..

Availability actually became deciding factor in my decision. Most colors, save black, weren't going to be available for delivery until february. However, I got lucky with the candy cola (the color I really wanted) and fender had 1 in stock and delivery only took a week.
I went with the american 5 string, and I am in no way disappointed. I love this bass.
