I have Fender American Vintage Jazz Bass '62.

but, i want to change the pickups, because of the buzz/hum noise.
I don't want to loose the original fender JP tone.
So, which pickup should i prefer?

thanx

With the SCN's I believe you can use your standard 250K volume and tone pots.

IIRC, the Vintage Noiseless set requires 1Meg.

Sonically, I think the VN's sound closer to the original JB "thump" though.

I think Dimarzio is making solderless electronics with their pickups. I'm not sure if they are ceramin or alnico. You want the alnico...

They're quiet pickups.

to me, the Vintage noiseless sounds more like a P-bass..
i haven't had any experience with the SCNs, if you want classic vintage tones you can look into Aguilar AG 4J-60, Lollar, or Nordstrand pickups

None of the aforementioned pickups will really give you the same tone. The stock pickups in your bass are really midrange focused, and unfortunately many noiseless jazz pickups are lacking in the midrange. If you really want to find a pickup that sounds similar, look for one that has a ton of high mids.

If you don't want to loose the tone, don't change them.
I've got '62 as well and the tone is too good to swap them.
Believe me, if there was a noiseless alternative to those pu's nobody would ever put them in a bass.

Keep in mind shielding can go a long way. It can be a pain in the $@! to properly ground and shield a bass, but it can do a lot to reduce some (but not all) of noise. I also have a mute push/pull button on my bridge vol knob (a series/parallel push pull on the neck volume). When you're not playing, you just pop the switch, and when you are playing in many situations the hum isn't an issue.

A tip from Marcus Miller (he uses vintage noisy pickups on his basses). I remember in one interview he was saying that he likes the tone of the bridge pickup soloed or more usual, the neck pu backed a bit. So at the soundcheck he closes the volume of the neck pu and checks the tone. The soundman hears all that noise and immediately goes :WHAT IS THAT??? So Marcus turns the volume back, the noise goes away, and he replies "everything's okay, don't worry". At the concert he turns the volume back during the song and plays whatever he likes, and noone can hear the noise because the band plays. In between songs he turns the volumes full on so there's no noise in pauses.

Retro,

I'm curious as to why you say the noiseless pups won't work with 250k controls. Mine work with both the standard issue Jazz control module and two different Varitone modules.

The price I pay for using the noiseless pups is reduced volume, something I'm pretty sure is a result of the greater impedance on the noiseless product (the numbers are something like 12k for the noiseless versus 7.5k for the single coils). I'm emerging from my depth of electrical/electronics knowledge as I type this, but I believe the added impedance is an unavoidable consequence of having the second coil oriented in such a way as to cancel the 60 Hz hum.

But now I'm curious--are you saying that matching 1meg controls to the noiseless pups will bring the impedance back down? I'm also curious if SCNs put up less impedance than the noiseless pups, and if so, why.

In any case, I'd certainly enjoy expanding the conversation on the subject of "noiseless" pups and how they work.

I just looked up where the SCNs are rated at 11.6k resistance, so they're not much different in that regard from the noiseless pups, which, as I said earlier, work fine with my 250k controllers except for reduced volume, which I'm thinking you get with the SCNs as well.

Here's what I would do. Keep the pickups you have in there since you seem to like the tone just hate the noise. I would buy a Parametric EQ. A cheap Behringer would do the trick you don't have to go whole hog. I'm assuming that you are running an amp with an effects loop so run it through there. A parametric EQ has 3 controls per frequency band. Boost/Cut, Frequency, and Bandwidth (or Q). First choose the pickup you are using. Boost the lowest band all the way (60 Hz falls into about that range) and sweep the frequency knob through the whole range. Stop where the noise is the loudest then narrow your Q knob until it gets really irritating. Then back off on the boost cut knob until the noise disappears. You should still have plenty of frequency response on either side of the frequency you just removed.

I recommend everybody that plays an electric instrument run a parametric EQ in their rigs also to compensate for room acoustics (there is no such thing as a "Flat" room). That is just my opinion though.

Stay Brown,
Rev J
