Just bought a '96 MIJ Jazz Bass, fretless with no lines, 50th anniversary sticker on the back of the headstock, all original.

I've done several searches but haven't been able to determine if the stock pups are MIJ or USA. It does have the (I'm assuming) ground strap on the outside of the body, you see it running from the bridge pup to the bridge itself.

One other question - I assume the body is alder, but I've read in a few places that some of the MIJ bodies were basswood. Any insights on that?

Does anyone know the answers to these questions or have a good source to check? This is my first Fender so I'm new, and I'd like to know a little more about my new purchase.

Thanks!

First of all, good on you - these are great basses. I have a '97 and love it.

As far as I know, all of the electronics are Japanese and rather ironically, the main weakness (if there is one) on these is the pickups, which tend to be a bit weak and on the noisy side. I replaced mine with diMarzio UltraJazz and dropped in an Audere JZ3 preamp and that bass is now a monster.

I don't know about the body wood - I'm curious to see what others here post. But the build quality of these basses is excellent.
