There's a difference between a Fender Jazz Bass Road Worn and a Fender Jazz Bass Pre-cbs?

Reading the specs I couldn't find any difference.
And couldn't find by eyeballing also.

In less words, I wanna know if there is sounding and aesthetic differences between these models :P

The road worn series is manufactured to look worn. A pre-CBS is naturally worn, with 45-50 years of mojo. So there's that, older wood and finishing having aged naturally and about $8000-odd worth of difference.

Thanks for your answer.

So they look basically the same and sound the same?

It's a road worn jb worth the money?

Well, I don't know. I've never had the good fortune to play a pre-CBS Fender and I have no real interest in an instrument that is artificially aged. It's my understanding that some of the custom shop guitars are made from new old stock (NOS), that is, wood and other materials that have been around since...well, a long time.

In that respect, NOS has had a chance to age, but not as a played instrument would. There's likely some good and bad to that (it hasn't been broken in the same way a played instrument has (bad, sort of), but it hasn't been dropped, exposed to environmental elements, etc. (good).

But, I'm not even sure whether the road worn uses any NOS or if they are just "reliced" to look old but are made of new materials.

Personally, I'd much prefer an old original instrument that has been played and aged naturally. I doubt a new instrument can be made to sound "old." And while it can be worn, the wear is not authentic; long-term finish checking, etc. can only be approximated, not duplicated.

As for "worth," it's a completely subjective question. People buy them, so at least they think they are worth the price.

Someone who owns or has played both vintage and road worn would be best to take you from here.

I think that my 66 bass soundds better than the new ones. It could just be me. I have a new jazz and an old one. I love them both, but they sound different. The road worn basses I have played in stores sound and play find though.

It really depends on if you want to pay the extra bucks for a vintage instrument.

Or conversely, if you want to pay extra for a fake vintage instrument. Some say Road Worns are excellent insruments, of which have I no doubt, but I personally refuse to pay extra for fake mojo.

imho, the whole NOS/fake-vintage thing is just a penalty you choose to pay because you don't want an instrument that looks new. What you should be primarily concerned with is sound and feel, not scratches and dings. I would take a new Fender 70s bass on a real 70s because of the money I'd save.

Choosing to pay threes times as much for a road-worn car because it didn't have AC or airbags makes about the same amount of sense. Go ahead and pay the extra for a new beat-up guitar, just know that you're paying a mojo penalty.

No disagreement from me. If you want a worn bass, your choice is a vintage one, or a fake vintage one. The fake vintage one is less in price. orrrr.... you can get a newer one that someone has worn a little for not as much.

My preference is to get one and be patient while it wears where you wear it out. The dings in my vintage instrument are all mine, and have some memories attached to each one.

buying a pre worn bass is cool, but the dings, scratch, stain or fading colors are what we call as battle-scars..
