I was looking for a 5 string jazz recently. Just wanted to hear what's recommended and what's not. Yes, the custom shop is probably better but I'm on a budget. Not MIM though.

I currently play a '62 jazz reissue which sounds awesome so jazz bass is my preferred pu configuration. But I need a 5-string.

I prefer comfortable necks - recently tried a 5-string Am. Std. Precision and it has a huge neck, I won't be able to play such a thing.

My preferencies at the moment are Jazz Plus V from the early 90's (slimmer neck) or even MIJ DR5 Heartfields.

I'm also considering Pedulla Rapture, but it's hard to find cheap.

What about am.deluxes? They've had all sorts of reincarnations over the years, some recommend them and some are not.

One of my favorite "5s" is the Roscoe Beck V. Not a traditional Jazz bass, but the two hum-bucking pickups are not only tap-able but can be used in either series or parallel, to give you a truly wide array of tones. If you have the chance I would check one out. Unfortunately, they no longer make the five-string version, but if you look you can find one... and you shouldn't have to break the bank either.

Looking at your choices, most are Fender, but I see a Pedulla. Have you ever considered an Ibanez? SoundGear in any form usually have thin necks. They sound good. I would try SR5** or higher, anything above usually is a good bass. So it could be SRA505 or SRT805 or SR755 or SR605...the difference in levels you can ck out www.ibanez.com

I have had different SoundGears in my lifetime, even my SR506 was very easy to play. Yeah, it was a 6 string.

So good luck searching, make sure you try 'em out at your local music store :)
