Squiers are nice for the price, although Affinity series is terrible, I would not recommend it to anyone. All Squiers have bodies from cheaper lighter woods and even if it sounds good it won't give you the same foundation as American or even Mex standard. And you will need to upgrade Sq pickups if you plan to gig with it.
Mex are usually bearable, but I haven't seen one sounding good.

MIJ sometimes kick $@!, but not always.

American standards are not always good sounding for some reason. (better that average MIA or MIJ though) I just played many in a shop and they almost always suck. American Vintage, Deluxe and even Highway series usually sound more alive and I'd recommend them over Am. St. (yes, they're more expensive).

In any case, I'd recommend Highway or Road Worn over American Standard.

Generally, MIA is better than MIJ, MIJ is better than MIM and MIM is better that a Squier.

But some particular instruments may sound better or worse. It's all matter of woods chosen since the construction is all the same. So play it before you buy and maybe one MIJ will blow another MIA out of the water.

I can't speak on the Affinities, but my experience with the Squier VM line (Jazz and Precision) is quite different. The wood on both those is a good sunstantial maple with a good heft, but not too heavy (to me). And the Duncan designed pickups do NOT need upraded. In fact NOTHING on the bass needs upgraded. Both mine are dead stock and are as gig-worthy as any bass.

I'm afraid I haven't tried anything of VM Squiers yet. So maybe they worth it.

From what I've played it goes like this (Squiers):

Affinity seres - the worst of the worst, everything's too bad to discuss.

Classic vibe - not bad at all, but lacks some meat and too light. Noisy pu's

Standard - good for beginners to intermediate, but the pickups need upgrade - too noisy. The rest of the hardware is fine. Also the bodies are made from Agathis which is not a wood good basses are made from.

Deluxe - probably the best in terms of electronics and the pickups, but the woods are still on the cheap side.

By the way, a couple of days ago I've seen a Jazz bass on sale at a local guitar shop. It was so insanely cheap that I asked to play it. It was a Jazz copy by some no name company - Johnson or something similar starting with J. Shell pink body, rosewood fb, passive pu's. It was very heavy - felt like 10lbs! I was surprised, but it had awesome tone, massive and thick. The action was high, the pickguard was warped, but it sounded good, much better than any Squier I ever played. So I'm not sure but it seems like weight plays an important role here. And ALL Squiers are light, maybe that's the reason they do not sound like a bass should.

there is a thread here in the Squier forums about the CV weighing in @ 9+ lbs. I wouldn't know, I don't own a CV. My VM is better in every way than my...ehm, ridiculously lightweight '99 MIM. I'm not sure about the other Squiers tho, but I tried out the new '77 VM 2 wks a go, nice feel, just like my VM. I wish I can swap the necks, I like the in lays better than my black in lays on my VM.
