These are good things to do when needed. Particularly replacing strings of your choice, however, be careful to not over-do maintenence type stuff. Depending on usage and how the bass is stored will determine this.

Hey guys I just got my bass yesterday and I love it,

Fender's been hyping about the new N3 pickups as noiseless, but is anyone having issues with the them? When I switch over from passive to active I get ALOT of buzzing.

It's not so quite on passive mode either... I can still here a bit of buzzing.

Do I have a faulty pickup or do you guys experience the same thing?

Other things to consider ruling out before anything else is done: Make sure your power-source is good. Make sure your cords are good and/or plug-ends clean. These things can contribute greatly to the noise you describe. Try a different power-source (maybe even a different location). Use a cord that you know is good. If you are still getting the noise you describe, than we are probably back to dealing with the shielding issue.

Yah I've checked these. I've tested using monster cables and no name brand ones and it still buzzes. It seems when I am directly facing the amp, the buzzing subdues, when I"m at an angle, the buzzing goes crazy... I think it's most likely a shielding issue...

Do you know any website where I can find additional information on how I would shield the electronics properly? Interested in the shielding tape...

Thanks Kata

You could Google 'Shielding a Guitar', 'Shielding a Bass', or a miriad of other searches on the internet and get a good idea of what it takes to accomplish this task. However, if you are attempting to do this yourself, make certain you are comfortable with doing it, otherwise, find someone qualified that is. It's not difficult to do; just make sure it's done correctly!

Thanks again Kata,

I'll try to put some tape inside the battery compartment, maybe see if that'll do any good before opening up the pick guard and messing around with electronics.

Definitely gonna keep this baby tho, (got it for a really great deal). Thanks for the advice, I was kinda thinking about returning it.

It works fine when I play it through a pedal, just sucks that I can't have clean clean tone without humming

Good news yesterday...my 2010 Jazz American Deluxe in Sunburst arrived yesterday. I had ordered it on Oct 28, so my wait was right at 5 1/2 months. It's a beautiful bass. It will take some getting used to - to find pickup and tone settings that I like. My only concern is that it is noisy as heck. I just got a 2010 Rickenbacker with single coils and don't have this problem in my set up.

Got mine last thursday, and also has the loud hum. It's a beautiful bass (Natural) but, the noise is unacceptible.

You are right, the noise is unacceptible. I didn't buy a higher end bass to have to deal with noise. It sounds like we are not alone. I will call Fender and my luthier and compare options.

I already contacted the place I bought it from, and I will also contact Fender. I'll keep you in the loop on any responses I get to this problem.

I've thought about returning it the 2nd day I got it cuz of the hum, but I realize it's only if the bass is at a certain angle with the bass amp. (Hum will be louder in active mode no doubt)

If the bass and bass amp are parallel to each other (you play in front of bass amp) the noise subdues,

if you're perpendicular (turn bass to the side while adjusting knobs on amp) the noise is crazy loud.

I decided the bass plays TOO well for me to return. Especially considering how rare it is to find one and I saved A TON of money on my bass (got a ridiculous deal). When I play live, I usually play through a pedal (noise gate is on) while being parallel to the amp anyways so it's ok. I think going thru a pedal helps subdue a lot of the noise even when I pluck. I have no idea, maybe the pedal helps some of the grounding issues I dont know but it's quiet as a mouse when I gig it live actually.

Bottom line, I'm happy with it and it's a keeper!!!!

It's a great bass (sounds great while playing -just keep your fingers on the strings) and nicely detailed. I don't think I'll return it. It just should be fixed - by Fender. I have a Squier VM that is dead quiet. I shouldn't have to buy a pedal to get rid of noise on an American Deluxe bass.

i definitely agree with you bass mako, it shouldn't need a pedal to get rid of noise on an american deluxe j bass. but its either that or ship it back to fender and who knows how long that'll take? @___@

Waiting on mine...ordered from American Music Supply, supposedly they had Wine Transparent Rosewood in stock, so I'm stoked.

I'm a little concerned with these humming issues, as I don't want to have to mod or correct such an expensive bass. I'll see how I feel when it arrives.

If anyone's looking for a 4-string Sunburst one of these beauties, Sam Ash in Franklin Mills (outside of Philly), has one and they ship quickly.

Cheers! :)

Just a question for everyone who ownes one, is the humming problem only with the 5 string basses or are there problems with the 4s as well? I have a 4 string and I have no serious humming problem, only when I am (very) close to fluorescent lights and am not touching the bass there is noise...but I just want to keep touching this bass, so that's not a real problem :D
