I ordered my 4 string Sunburst model via Motor City Guitar in Michigan on October 28, 2010 and am still waiting. :( I thought my 3 1/2 months wait was bad, but after reading this forum I've resigned myself to a 6 month wait.

I haven't found a Sunburst model online in anyone's stock either.

I put in a pre-order at musicians friend and it feels like I've been waiting forever for a sunburst one!! Initial estimated stock date of January 16 got pushed back, now it's staying it'll be back in stock Feb 23. Hopefully it doesn't get pushed back again!! :(

My Black and Maple did, in fact, turn up at the end of January.
OH YES!!!
It felt 'big' when I first strapped it on but I soon got used to it and it balances well. The extra cutaway on the back of the body (compared to my '76 four-string Jazz) really helps if I need to see over the B string.
It's a bit of a monster and it's the first 5-string I've played where the B string sounds the same as the other four and not like some strange different instrument. The preamp sounds amazingly powerful and, as Fender claim, really can handle the full range of notes.
My only criticism is the pickup mix control. I would have preferred two seperate controls but, to be honest, I'm getting used to that too and find that I generally use the control in one of two places a few degrees either side of centre.
Well worth the wait.

Yeah, baby! My Wine and Rosewood 4-String arrived, also. Gorgeous bass with great detail work (especially like the binding on the neck) that just reeks of quality. Great heft and feel and it "fits" me well. I suppose now that the wait is over, I'll say it was worth it, but, dagnabbit, now I wish I'd been playing this puppy for the last half-year!

This is my first active bass -- I do like having the option to switch that on or off, since my sound is currently "old school", but I'm enjoying exploring the tonal options the active brings and will probably expand my palette in the weeks to come. If nothing else, if the guitards absolutely will not turn it down even after the singer and I yell at them repeatedly, I can hit the switch and cut through! :-)

I agree, lowdown! I just got the 5-string version of your bass and I love, LOVE the white binding around the neck. So choice!

Enjoy your killer bass! I've been enjoying mine, for sure!

Hey guys I just got my bass yesterday and I love it,

Fender's been hyping about the new N3 pickups as noiseless, but is anyone having issues with the them? When I switch over from passive to active I get ALOT of buzzing.

It's not so quite on passive mode either... I can still here a bit of buzzing.

Do I have a faulty pickup or do you guys experience the same thing?

What I discovered, after going through 4 brand new 2010 American Deluxe 5's, is poor shielding. I returned 2 of the 4 and kept the remaining two as they were both keepers and without issue. I was going to purchase all 5 with the intention of keeping two, however, after getting 2 poorly completed basses, I decided to stop with what I had.

These are very nice basses IF they are completed correctly and pass a legitimate quality test. If you find a good one, be glad and keep it. Fender really needs to get their quality issues under control. If they do, the 2010 models will do well. So far, not passing the test as far as I've seen. It's a shame because the 2 2010's American Deluxe 5's I kept are REALLY nice basses.

I guess my didn't have good shielding then.. Can I send it back to fender for them to warranty?

Well, you certainly have that right. But then how long would that take and would it be done correctly (is the big unknown)? If it were me: If the bass is perfect in every other way, I'd either do it myself or have someone I trust and is qualified to do it. This would probably take way less time and worth the extra few bucks to have it done right (as it should've been done before it left Fender).

Yah.. you're right. I love the bass, it plays perfectly, the only thing is it buzzes like bee when I switch over to active mode. I'm currently playing it through a noise gate to zap the buzzing but it also sucks tone. (u can still hear the buzz when u pluck a note, just quiet when I'm not playing anything)

I spent time cleaning the fretboard, lubing up the nuts/saddles, tightening the tuners and put elixirs strings on it.

Would I need to buy new pickups or can I have someone "shield" these pickups to minimize feedback?

No, the P/U's are fine. No need to replace anything unless it's not right.

CLARITY: As far as shielding - you don't shield P/U's. The shielding is done insude the electronics, battery, and P/U cavities (i.e. insided these routed-out areas - Make sense?). There are 2 types of shielding methods: Use of shielding paint or shielding tape. Either work well when done correctly.
