Hi, I had recently purchased a used 2006 Am. Std. Jazz Bass (supposely all stock) that has that S-1 switch. Whenever I put it in series (S-1 Switch down), I lose a large amount of level. Is this normal? I opened it up and checked the wiring, and it matches the schematics perfectly, the wiring is definitely stock without any tempering that I can detect. Any suggestions?

some additional information. When S-1 not engaged I played with the two volume knobs individually and found out that the neck pick up is way way weaker than the bridge.

how can I tell if it's the circuitry or the pickup?

OUCH. Ok. You are not alone.

I am NO fan of S-1 or Greasebucket or any other cockamamie unproven or shotr lived tone scheme.

The SWITCHES in the S-1 tone circuit are notorious trouble makers.

I suggest converting to traditional Volume/Volume/Tone configuration or BETTER YET get it converted to MASTER VOLUME/BLEND/TONE configuration.

Won't be cheap either way. But will be worth it.

Even Fender has given up on the S-1. There have been numerous and well founded complaints.

I personally would not buy an S-1 instrument as a player instrument without expecting to "FIX" it.

thank you brotherdave!! I'm a new member on this forum and prior to registering I've read a whole lot of useful info posted by you. Actually I join this forum just to try to PM you but was not able to do so because I'm still new here. Thank you very much for responding to my thread.

I am planning to do the Master Vol./Blend/Master Tone config. and I have also placed an order of PIO cap from Axegear. Jim has been very helpful and respond to every single one of my newbie questions regarding caps. I ended up getting a .033 USA vitamin Q(Jim's recommendation), also got an .047 and a .022 orange drops for my other instruments. So yes Brotherdave I've been paying attention to your previous posts.

Now, how likely would I have a defective pickup(hope that's not the case), or is it more likely a defective S-1 circuitry?

About to place an order on the blend pot, I've read somewhere that a 500K would work better than a 250K? and I shouldn't ground the Blend Pot? What's your take on that?

thanks again for chimming, I was really hoping you would. :)

Welcome to the forum.

Nobody can PM anyone here. Can't upload photos either. That keeps the site fast and cuts down on server usage.

You can contact me directly by clicking the CONTACT on the main menu of the website in my forum signature below.

There are several wiring schematics you could use. Some schematics use 500K pots others use 250's. On a passive Fender bass I like 250's. Those are 250's in there now I think.

ah, I see. smart move on Fender.

the Bourns 250K Blend Balance Pot is here, time to dump the S-1. Quite a pain in the rear end looking for a single volume pot.

the rewire work is now done. this bass no longer has S-1 but it has now the Vol/Blend/Tone config.

also it's now confirmed my problems with this bass has been cause by the neck pickup. with S-1 gone the circuitry is much more simplified.

my first ebay guitar purchase has proven to be a bad deal.
