So I've been on a hunt for a bass upgrade and recently I found a beautiful used Olympic White '62 reissue that I just love. However, poking around on the interwebs I've discovered a number of people complaining of neck warping in such reissues. In the shop, the bass looks fine and the previous owner had no apparent problems. If it has had no problems thus far is it relatively safe to bet on no problems in the future?

Hi Overcoate,
If you just love it....then you just love it...what can I say?
Warped necks aren't particular about models or series. It occasionally happens on ANY model, series, or brand for that matter. If you've checked the one you like out, or had it checked out then you should be fine.
Just my 2 cents. :O) Good luck with whatever you end up choosing!
Best regards,
rob

factors affecting neck warping are strings, set up, and weather...

Other factors are the HUMAN factor. Improper truss rod adjustment techniques have ruined many a bass. Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures likewise. Both are human errors not to be blamed on the instrument.

I've got a 1995 '62 reissue and it's my only bass for the last 7 years. However, when I've bought it used I've put new 45-105 set of strings (the old ones were 40-100) and the neck bowed. I've tried to adjust it back and the trussrod broke. No, I'm not an idiot who doesn't know how to adjust a trussrod, I'm playing for more that 20 years, gigged, recorded etc. But it just broke and the neck remained warped.

So I took it to a pro repairsman. He told me this is a common problem with Fenders, especially with reissues. The old truss rod construction has a very small bolt on the rear end and that bolt went through the wood, eating a cavity in the neck. So he repaired the neck: replaced the fretboard, filled the cavity, put a new modern truss rod in, made a new fretboard, binding etc.etc.
Needless to say the repair was quite expensive.

Since then I've had no problems. Yes, the "collectors' value" is lost, but I'm not a collector, I play it.

So keep in mind it may surprise you.

Despite all this headache the bass sounds awesome and if you like the sound I do recommend it.
