I have just purchased a 1978/1979 Fender Jazz Bass and I would like to know if anyone has any idea what colours were available then as it has been finished in a really bright yellow which I know is not the original colour. It has a white scratch plate, rosewood neck.

Any help I can get would be appreciated as I wnat to return it to it's orignal colour scheme. Some one mentioned that it may have been a natural wood colour but I can not confirm that.

Can anyone let me know how I would add my bass as a picture so you can all see the horrible banana yellow it is? It's similar to my avatar pic colour.

Regards, Gary

Relying on memory alone I would say the color choices were:

Olympic White
Black
3-color Sunburst
Lake Placid Blue
Clear coat on ash
Brick Red (not sure what Fender called it but I had a precision in this color and it was kind of a fire engine red, not bright like the Jaguars).

Many thanks for the help at least there are a few choices that I can look at. Although my first preference would be the 3 tone sunburst for the classic look.

Regards,

Gary

Well, I had a '78 P-bass and it had a natural finish, so I would assume a '78 0r '79 Jazz as the OP is asking about would come in natural, too. I seem to remember one of the 70's Fender catalogs I had featured a walnut finished bass. I'm not sure exactly what specific year it was, though.

Be certain that the bass was refinished. There was a very bright Yellow color that was used on Stratocasters. This color may have been done on some Jazz basses.

I don't want you to refinish an original color just because it is unusual.

You may have a collectible bass.

Yeah I'd email a picture to fender and ask if its the original colour before doing anything you can't reverse.

The bright yellow that I am thinking of was used on the Jeff Beck signature stratocaster, in the 80's so it may be a stretch to think that it was used on a 78 Jazz but, who knows?

The natural finishes used on Fenders in the 70s were the natural ash , which looks just like the bass in Bathead's avatar and the brown finish which I used to call babysh*t brown for lack of a better name.

Walnut was actually used on some basses as a body and neck wood but it is a fair description of what the brown finishes looked like.

Again, if can post a picture from any digital camera, we can all give you our best guess as to the originality of the finish.

If memory serves, the natural finishes first showed up around the time CBS bought fender (mid 70s?). Another color that might have been available was the Daphne blue.

I do believe that Baby Sh*t Brown was the name of that color. Very popular at the time (as were avocado color refrigerators). I used to have a 58 P-bass that someone refinished TO the BSB. At least it didn't screw up the sound.
