I've had my jazz bass for 30 years. At one point a friend "looked it up" and said it was a 68. Recently another "expert" said the inlays are that of a 72. There's no serial # on the back but there a series of 4 long patent #'s on the front of the head stock. Anyone know where I can find a definitive answer?

Here's a pic

The lack of a stamped serial number on the neck plate is pause for concern.

Pull the control plate and examine the date codes on the pots.

I'm just talking about the back of the head stock. I haven't looked at the neck plate, is that where a the s#'s are on these?

Yes. And the plate itself should have the large embossed backwards "F" as well.

I'm guessing that the instrument is a '71 or a '72 -- I don't think I ever saw the maple fretboard in combination with the ivory blocks and white binding on a Jazz Bass prior to then.

540013 on the neck plate put's it at '73-76?? according to Fender.com. Is this as accurate as it gets? Here's what they say:

Fender was sold to CBS in January 1965. Serial numbering didn't change immediately because instruments continued to be made using existing, tooling, parts and serial number schemes. The chart below details Fender serial number schemes used from 1965 to 1976. Notice that there is quite a bit of overlap in numbers and years.
SERIAL NUMBERS PRODUCTION DATES
L50,000s up to L90,000s 1965
100,000s 1965
100,000s to 200,000s 1966 to 1967
200,000s 1968
200,000s to 300,000s 1969 to 1970
300,000s 1971 to 1972
300,000s to 500,000s 1973
400,000s to 500,000s 1974 to 1975
500,000s to 700,000s 1976
