Are all American made Jazz basses supposed to have an "F" on the back of the neck plate? Cause I'm thinking of buying a used American made J-bass from 2002 as a gift for a family member, but in the pictures it has no "F" on the back neck plate. The headstock says made in the U.S.A., and the serial number on the back is authentic, but I was just curious about the plain chrome neck plate, cause they mentioned that all the parts are original. I'd really appreciate any help on this cause I'm not a musician and I know pretty much nothing about instruments.

Thank you

AFAIK, the only Jazz Basses to have the "F" neck plate were the CBS-era instruments and the modern re-issues of same......

These neck plates are routinely available as accessories from Fender and can be further personalized by having a serial number stamped on them as shown on this example of a '66 Jazz Bass clone I built for my brother a couple of years ago.

In this time of cheap knockoffs and hi-res printers, I would not use something as easy to reproduce as a neck plate to confirm authenticity of an instrument. The only way, besides playing the actual instrument, would be to fully research what the instrument should look like. You should be able to answer questions like; What did the logo for this model year look like? Which colors did it come in? Are the strings strung through the body? If you can't answer these and other questions, the only base you'll have for deciding to purchasing a certain instrument is whether or not the price is justifiable. Put differently, if the bass plays well for the money, who cares whether it's a Fender or a Funder?
