Here's a question for instrument techs out there, i.e., please don't guess if you don't know the answer ;)

Is there a way to determine how many hours of playing time you'll get from a 9-volt battery? I've seen some computations online that are way off the mark. For myself, I practice bass about 1-2 hours a day, using a cheap pair of headphones as a monitor (i.e., a have a 1/4" adapter on the headphones plugged directly into the bass). I get months of usage this way using a Duracell, but I'm curious what the actual playing time will be.

Anybody who knows the real answer, please step up.

Really an ironic solution to the problem. The batt-o-meter requires a 9v battery so if I have one in my case to check my instrument battery and it says to replace the battery, I could just take the battery out of the batt-o-meter. Hmmm.

That's what I did to Ox, when I gig...now I replace about 9 mos or so, dead or not. If I do a studio session, fresh battery in regardless :)

I'd bring a fresh battery too every set.. but well I only use an active 5 string bass only for about 1 or 2 songs... then I'd play with my passive jazz all the way

Just a suggestion...

Go to your local "Batteries Plus" store and find the "Ultralife" brand 9 VDC battery, stock number U9VL-BP. It is a Lithium battery that will last roughly 4 to 5 times longer than a standard Duracell or Energizer Alkaline.

I gig each weekend from October through March and practice several times each week. I put one of these in my Power Jazz Bass Special about a year ago and it still shows 9.38 volts on the commercial grade meter I use to test things like that.

I recommend that type for anyone who doesn't want to 'go silent' while on stage.

I will try that. Are they a lot pricier? btw, what year is your Power Jazz Bass Special? Is it black? I've only seen 1 red one ever.

The UltraLife batteries are a bit more expensive than standard Alkaline... My last one was $ 4.95 as compared to $ 3.79 for a Duracell Alkaline here locally. However, since the Lithium lasts 4 to 5 times longer than an Alkaline doing the same work load, the small extra price is well worth it.

My Power Jazz Bass Special is a MIJ E series 1984 and yes, it is metal flake red, no pick guard, 34 inch long scale, with 5 controls ( volume, tone, midrange frequency sweep, pickup blend and pickup select ). It also has the large Jazz Bass Fender Logo bridge cover and I enhanced the bridge ground wire system and also grounded the bridge cover. It's one of my favorites of the 4 basses that I currently own. I tested this against a MTD active American series bass a year ago and this Fender PJBS ran circles around the MTD # 435 American in my opinion.

I'll look for it today. I almost bought the red one I saw 2 yrs a go to match my '87. Mine is black. I didn't get it, the price wasn't right at the time. I luv mine.
