What's the difference between a 62 jazz bass and a '66 one? sonically different and in cosmetics?

except for the stacked knobs are there any minor improvements?

The primary mechanical improvement between 1962 and 1966 was the method used to ground the bridge plate to the rest of the instrument's wiring. In '62 the ground consisted of a thin brass strap that ran from the bridge pickup to beneath the bridge, resting on the surface of the body (this strap was visible if the bridge cover was removed). Around mid '64 Fender started drilling a small obliquely-angled hole from the bridge pickup cavity to the area of the bridge plate then using a short piece of AWG22 wire to ground the bridge (the wire was totally concealed within the body).

Cosmetically, some changes appeared in 1965. All Jazz Bass necks received white binding on the fretboard starting in March. By December, white MOP block inlays were also added to the rosewood fretboard (maple was not offered as an option at this time). These bound-and-blocked necks are sometimes referred to as "tuxedo necks". In '66 Fender began to second-source tuners for their bass instruments. The "coffin-base" medium stem reverse-wind shamrock-key types were supplemented by a trapezoid-base style with oval-shaped keys (the so-called "paddle" tuners).

1966 marked the end of the gold-hardware option for all Fender instruments.
