My Jazz bass V in ash should be arriving at the local dealer soon. I'm considering getting a chrome bridge cover like the one on the American Vintage 62 or 75 Jazz Bass 4 string to put on it. Does anyone know whether it would fit? I think it would help the appearance and maybe improve the balance. Does anyone else have similar ideas; or is this something I shouldn't do?

I'd leave it as is. I've heard more people complain about they catch and hold dust. A lot of guys that have them on the bass take them off later on.

I'm doubtful that it'll even fit. I have one on my '66 clone and it's a pretty tight squeeze with the narrower 4-string bridge.

In any case, I think you'll find yourself removing it in short order once you discover that it prevents a proper palm-muting technique.

I can't imagine that balance would be an issue as Fender has moved to lighter tuners in recent years. A better solution would be to get a non-slip strap and leave the bass alone. Even if you could get the bridge cover, the amount of weight it adds would never compensate for a poorly balanced instrument, which the Jazz is not. Now if we were talking about a Thunderbird...
