Hi guys. I've been trying to find strings that slap nicely for my MIM jazz bass. I got some Fender super bass 7250s (nickel-plated steel medium round wounds), and they sounded immaculate for the first day or so, but they became very dull very fast. At this point they are fine for rock, but are a bit too dull to sound good for slap. I've also kept them as clean as possible. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks

I love the sound of Elixer strings. Wish I could afford them...

Try Dean Markley Blue Steels. In my experience they seem to last a little bit longer than Fenders. Moreso even than Rotosonds. Even when they dull down some, they still have a decent edgy tone, IMO.

Cool, thanks Bathead. I'll try those out. Follow up question, though. Does stainless steel oxidize? And what gauge would you recommend?

AFAIK, stainless steel does not oxidize. I think that's why it's called stainless . :D
I can' tell you what guage to get, that's a personal taste kind of thing. All I can tell you is I always got medium light (.45- .105)

Exactly, that's why like the Blue Steels. Even when they're dead they're not. Kinda like zombies.

what do you think or feel about the blue steel's tone?

DRs tend to have an extended top n a balanced bottom while Rotosounds have growly mids and pretty decent treble..

I'm not really good at describing tone, but ... they just seem to me to have a nice full tone, good top end without being harsh or clanky (even when older), solid bottom end. I don't know what to telll you other than I like them better than Rotos, they seem to have a more "authentic" bass tone to them, especially after they've dulled down a bit.
That's my take on them, anyway.

Well, on my '78 P-bass I had for close to 15 Yrs. I started with Rotos, changed to Blue Steels after a couple of years, maybe changed them at most twice after that, on my '08 Jazz I got in Mar. of '09. have had the same set of Blue Steels since I got the bass. The tone, IMO, after a good while, on both basses was/is still nice.
No noticeable fret wear, but for the past fifteen years I haven't really played hardly at all (trying to get back up to speed currently) so my situation may not be indicative of how they wear on the frets.

how about finger drag noise during recording? are they noticeable? I wanted to keep a set of old SS rounds rather than using flatwounds

Finger noise during recording? Don't know, I've never recorded with them. Otherwise, I haven't noticed any when playing, That kind of noise is not something that bothers me usually, so I tend not to notice it anyway.
