I was wondering what some of you thought of active vs passive pickups.

It's nice that you can't get shocked with active pickups. You get a sweeter tone with good passives though. Some actives are hard on the speakers for people not wanting to use a darn preamp(like me).

I like simplicity. Passive for me, specifically, a Precision bass, about as simple as it gets.

I'm good with a Passive Bass.. esp using P or J 4 strings... i reserve the actives on a 5 stringer

In my case, I own examples of both styles... Two Fender MIM P-Basses which are passive, a 1980's Fender Power Jazz Bass Special which is active and an Ibanez GSR200 which is partially active. Each has it's particular usage for different situations and both styles do what they were intended. Getting to know the attributes and limitations of any bass is necessary for the user so you, yourself, can choose equipment that matches your style, venue, format and gig requirements.

The new passives are really good. Actives for me tho. I always like the sound of actives, the clarity. I like playing with passives doing funk. But when with the band - NYHC, metal crossovers, actives.
