does anybody use them on a fretted Jazz Bass?? I'd just like to ask... since im currently using a medium gauge flatwounds set (GHS), how are flatwound's tension compared to nylon tapewounds..

I've been looking at either Rotosound Tru Bass 88 and Fender Nylon 9120M set.. and since they are thicker than the mediums.. do i need to modify the nut?

I play fretless 90% of the time, but nylon tapewounds do have their place with fretted basses. In terms of tension, they do tend to have less tension than many flats, but TI Jazz flats are about as low tension as they come, so many tapewounds are slightly higher tension or about the same as those. I haven't tried the GHS strings you're currently using.

I've used/am using the following tapewounds:

Roto TruBass88s
LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass 760N
Fender 9120M
Rickenbacker Electro Tapewounds (you won't find these!)
Fender Nylon Filament (hard to find these days also).

I really liked the Fender nylon filament - they were basically like nylon roundwounds. The only time I had them, they came on my '76 Precision when I bought it used about a year ago (the strings were 13 years old at the time and still sounded great). Word is they're not being made anymore, but maybe you can find them.

The Fender 9120 set is quite good, and fairly low in tension. I did not have to modify my nut for these. Nice growl, little finger noise. THe issue I have with these and nearly all low-tension strings is that I play hard, and they give too much. Nylon tapes also tend to create fingerboard "clack" - that dreaded sound that may be more common to fretless than fretted, I don't know for sure.

Roto TruBass 88s are the biggest gauge; you will probably need to modify your nut for these. These are the smoothest and fullest-sounding nylon tapes I've used. They do lack a certain amount of mid growl, however. But they are clear and crisp and deliver on the low end. I have found that the Roto 88s give some of the lowest pickup output of all the nylon tapes I've used, but that's been over 12 years or so; maybe I didn't have enough data points at the same time. But I also love mids, so I'm not overly nuts about Roto 88s.

LaBella DTB Nylon Tapes - these have a great growl, but feel a bit irregularly rough to me. They also create too much clack. Have I mentioned how much I HATE CLACK? But, nylon tapes all do this, so if you play lightly, it shouldn't bother you. If you play heavy, stick with LaBella DTB regular (metal) flats - these are amongst the best bass strings I've ever used.

Hope this helps.

Well, they may not, but my experience has been that every bass is different. The differences in nut slot width may not be highly variable, but one never knows. If you do need to mod your nut slots, use a set of rounded files gently, and DO NOT increase the depth of the slots, just the widths. If you find you need this mod and you're not comfortable doing it yourself, take it to a local luthier. It shouldn't cost you more than $10-$15.

If you do it yourself, realize that a good set of rounded nut files is not a garden-variety item. Stew-Mac may have them. If you need to improvise, be careful. Then again, a nut replacement (and custom slot width) is no big deal, but it will cost you a bit more like $25 plus cost of raw nut (which should be no more than $7-$8 ).

from your experience with the Fender 9120, what bass were they on? and was it the stock nut?

I had the 9120s on a Rick 4003, but I had already modified the nut slightly for a different set at another time, so I can't be sure whether the 9120s would require slot widening.

I see.. from what I've heard they won't need any nut mods.. so thats a good thing... by the way any experience in them when played live?

I heard David Labruyere uses them in the Mayer tracks..

SB 2? i heard Dela uses these before using Rotosound rounds... so i'm curious of the tone they'd produce... however I'm in the process of aging a roundwound..

how do you compare them to flatwounds? i.e. GHS or Labella flats?
