Hello good people of Fender Community

I would just like to ask some suggestions, well me and friends decided to put up a home garage practice area, so we don't have to pay for studio fees..

but im caught up in an option for a bass amp... would a 35w bass amp be enough? or do i need an 80w one?

If you're talking "garage" in the truest sense of the word, the acoustics will be rotten. With guitars and drums, I'd say the 80w will be the ticket. Always better to turn it down than not be able to turn it up.

35W of tube will generally outperform 80W of solid state, so there's that to clarify. Assuming you mean SS to SS comparison, the drums in a garage will be loud, no matter what you do, do 80W will likely be better.

sorry its solid state amplifier... well actually its just something that i would leave at my friend's garage.. so well i checked out a made in china amplifier well it was really cheap but surprisingly it sounds good.. well of course the durability issues.. but i think I'd be getting an 80w for less than 200USD

you wont really know until you get the whole band together... i have tried a couple of 100-150 watt combos that had loads of punch when practicing by myself, yet couldnt keep up at all in a full band setting.... i previously had a Ampeg BA115HPT (220 watts) and i was running it almost max all the time during practice...

@kgerry
how many are you in the band?

well there's only 3 of us.. then i usually minimize the overdrive/distortion of the guitars... well im worried if I'd be able to cut through the drums... well it won't really be a super loud practice...

we are a 6 piece blues band... but even as a trio i find i was competing with the drums and guitar on certain nights..... at low vol it's fine... but if one guy has a few pops and wants to really dig in you need that headroom in reserve... you can always turn down, but if you are running close to the end you cant always turn up.....

not an issue with the Mesa head... even running only one cab it has loads of O/P.....

FWIW I have a semi-regular jam with a few guys in a two car garage. Just some rugs on the floor to help with acoustics. Always one, sometimes 2 guitars and an idiot drummer. I drag my 60-whatever pound 100 watt Ampeg BA115 to that and have never had a problem volume-wise, I can get boomy, which I'll EQ differently. I run the volume and gain at around 12/11 o'clock and never feel that I am not loud enough or not being heard in the mix, and am never told that they can't hear me. Granted they're guitarists and can't hear beyond themselves anyway. The drummer can't even hear himself, or how off he is, so he doesn't count. I would not say that we are LOUD, but a nice, even, jamming with friends who play consistant with the drums volume. I have never felt the need for more. YMMV
