Hi,
I have been playing bass for 30yrs. and gig out on a regular basis.
The time has come for me to get a new bass and I want a Fender Jazz.
I like both the American Standard and the Highway1.
Which would you recommend. I need something with great tone and
very roadworthy.

Thanks

Hi.
Im not sure i can help but im expecting a HW-one jazz this week. This is to replace a MIA that i found to be sub standard.

I like the MIA but as im gigging every weekend i felt i wanted a bass that didnt cost as much but did the job.
I used to own a HW1 Jazz and from memory the neck was faster than the MIA.

Have you played both yet? Im still wondering how the HW-one neck feels compared to the MIA, but i have a feeling im going to feel happier with a cheaper, but no less tone wise equal, bass.

I just wish the HW-one came with a maple neck.

well I like the american standards better.. esp in terms of color option, and well it comes with a case  plus the finish is ok.. and won't scratch as easy like in the HW1s

I like the Highway 1 tuners better. The Bad*$@! Bridge is definately better. I'll still have to vote for the American Standard though.

Finish wear could be an issue. I play a lot and durability is important.
What exactly is the Grease Bucket set up?

I called my local music shop today and they have both the HW1 and Am Std
in stock. I'll take a ride down there tomorrow and try both out side by side and make my decision. Right now I'm leaning toward the HW1 for two reasons, cost and finish. I like the nitro finishes on the HW1.
If thats the one I go with I will probably end up getting an Am Std at a later date.

FWIW I have a 2006 Highway One P-Bass and a 2008 American Standard Jazz bass.
I love the Highway One for the great feeling neck(granted it's a P-Bass neck) and the nitro finish. Having had it for three years, there are no signs of player wear yet, and the few dings that I do have are nothing significant whatsoever, the finish has not fallen apart on me or chipped off. Like glbass said, I have "shine" in areas that get more skin contact. I treat my basses as tools, but I don't throw my tools around. I take care of them so they last and work for me. At first I liked the greasebucket, but have since swapped it out. Plus the bass comes with a BadAss bridge, which new will run you close to $100 alone.

The American Standard Jazz I am in love with. Granted I swapped the pups to DiMarzio Model J's, but the fit and finish is impecable. A great feeling jazz neck, perfect neck pocket, newer upgraded bridge(I am of the opinion that the BadAss bridge is of really no sonic/tonal value; it's awesome cause it says BadAss on it though.)With the model J's I get a quite convincing P-Bass tone out of it, and can make it sound like a Jazz bass when I need to. And it comes with a HSC, like eyecandy said. Also has a maple fretboard option.

I'm telling you stuff that you already know but you need to go down and play the two or more basses you are interested in side by side and for an extended time. Put it through your routine. Which bass will make it better? Also IMO do not worry about cost, because if you let that come into play, you may second-guess your decision.

I am not sure of your location, but I am sure GC/MF(and maybe others) will have a 20% sale this coming weekend. Maybe?

the highway 1 current model is a very good bass... comparing both all you'll worry about is the finish... plus the american standard comes with a case (LOL)

well to put it simply the bridge and neck of the HW1 can be comparable to the Am Standard however if you want a neck through option I think the Am Standard offers that? (correct me if I'm mistaken)
