...HELLO MY FELLO FENDER FREAKS,
I've got an issue....about 13 yrs ago I bought a couple of vintage re-issue bass's...one was a Vintage Wht '57 P-Bass comonly called a "gold guard" because of it's gold annodized pickguard! The second was 3 Tone Sunburst "stack-knob" J-Bass. Both were stolen about 5 yrs ago in San Diego along with a ton of other gear, but heres my issue: when I bought it, Fender called it a '62 J-Bass. The thing is Fender introduced the "stack-knob" J-Bass in Jan 1960 and production ran for 1 1/2 yrs till the end of June 1961. Well I'm about to purchase another one and cant wait, but apparently will have to due to back ordering issues.....but notice they're still callin' it a '62?

So my fello freaky fender frenz if you have a cure for my issue, please be so kind as to post it here! Thnx JD LOMPOC CA

The issue is your information is not correct. The change over from the stacked knobs to the current layout was completed in 1962, not 1961.

Just looked it up in my book, "The Fender® Bass An Illustrated History" which you can buy on this web site.

Great book if you are a Fender buff.

The naming inaccuracy of the '62 Jazz bass is something that you will have to take up with Fender.
The fact that stack-knob jazz basses were not actually made during 1962 was widely known and understood when the Vintage reissue series was introduced back in 1982.
Its old news. No big deal.

Some additional discrepencies are the fact that most fender basses did not come with slab sized finger boards in 1962 and in early '57, Precision basses had the old style single coil pickup.

Fender can call a reissue series anything they want.

Its just a name.

If you want to call your stack-knob Jazz bass a reissue 1960 Jazz, then you will be more accurate than FMIC, but I would still call it a '62 reissue when trying to sell it.

At least you can still buy a stack-knob Jazz Bass.

The 3-knob layout already existed on the 1959 prototypes with the Jazzmaster®-type soapbars. It was definitely back on the final production versions in late 1961/early-to-mid 1962.

Fender also offers the US Vintage '62 Jazz Bass® with the 3-knob layout. Although not officially listed on their official Website, it was featured on the Japanese official fan club.

Suhr and Lakland produce their own Jazz Bass® copies (Classic J - pictured below, Joe Osborn & Darry Jones signature series) with the stack knob layout.
