I posted this question in the bass amp section of the forum but I don't believe anyone actually reads those posts!! So here it is again:

I currently play a Fender MIA Jazz Bass through a GK 700W 1001RB head into a GK 4X10 cab. This is a great rig but the 4X10 cab is showing some limitations if I try to hit frequencies much lower than a standard tuned low E. For example, if I play through an Aguilar octave pedal, the 4X10 cab can't pick up notes much lower than C# below the standard low E.

Would a 15" speaker cab solve this problem? Are there any 5 string players out there that tune their low B string down even further? How do you solve this problem?

I would welcome any suggestions on cabs that would provide much lower notes with clarity.

Have you considered that the problem might be the pedal?

I would try a different pedal before I invested in a new cab.

MXR BOD or EBS OctaBass might be an alternative choice but as far as i've heard.. the aguilar octamizer is an OK pedal

I use a GK 700RB-II into a GK neo 2x12 and I get planty of low end response from my Ken Smith 6-string. I used to use an old GK 4x10 and didn't experience this same problem. But the 2x12 w/horn is killer.

Also, make sure you engage the "Five-string" toggle in the voicing filters section of the head. This will add definition to your low B. Any frequencies below that are basically more felt than clearly heard (especially if you've been playing music for 30 years!).

A 15" could certainly help, but I don't care for just 15s because I feel you really lose the heart of the bass sound which is in the low-upper mids.

If your GK 4x10 is 8 ohms, you could add an 8 ohm 15" in parallel to run your whole rig at 4 ohms. However, you said you are using a GK 1001RB at 700W. You are only getting the full 700W if your 4x10 is 4 ohms. If it's an 8 ohm cabinet, you're running somewhere around 525W (see manual).

The best scenario would be if your 4x10 is 8 ohms, add the 15" in parallel and you'll be sending ~350W to the 4x10 and ~350W to the 15". That's a killer rig for sure.

If your current 4x10 is 4 ohms, you're in a bit of a spot because all you can do is add the 15" in series (it would be better to get a 4 ohm 15" in this case, but good luck finding that!).

Sorry if you already knew all this - many folks don't.
