errr? finish affects the tone of the bass?

Yes it does. Unfortunately Fender dips the body in a super thick plastic sealer. It makes finishing the bass super easy and therefore super cheap. It is also great at hiding flaws such as knots in the wood, also lowering costs. This started about 1963 according to the vintage forums. It's one of the things I wish Fender would stop doing. I would much rather have a thin finish that might chip or wear out faster and have better tone. It's the worst on acoustic guitars. Try a super thick finshed super glossy guitar and a thinly finished. Hard to do an A/B since the woods are different, one might be laminated and whatever but the thinner finish should sound bigger and better. Also, a thin finished guitar should age better. Fender even has made the undercoat thinner on the newer American Standard basses. Here's an article that's interesting: http://www.caraguitars.com/fullerplast.asp
Fullerplast is the name of the thick gooey undercoat.

Yep pretty nasty. When I was a teen I bought a 1983 Jazz bass that was a year old and kinda beat. A couple of years later I tried refinishing it and had a hell of a time trying to strip that undercoat off. I didn't try heat; no internet back in the mid 80's lol!!
