Hello all, first post on here. Hoping not to offend people!!!

I recently aquired a MIM 70'd RI Jazz Bass as I love the look of the block inlays. I wasn't too keen on the sheer amount of poly on the thing. Looks like it had been sunk into plastic. After a bit o' research I decided to take the shine off and I love the results. I've seen it done to loads of Les Pauls but no jazz basses. Let me know what you think.

Can I not upload pics to the page rather than links?

Yep it looks great, so the million dollar question is - how did you do it?

Well this is the best site I found that pointed me in the direction

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/epiphon ... heavy.html

There's a beautiful black beauty les paul that's been done too on the forum.
Basically he used a red scotch brite pad on a sander. I couldn't find scotch brite so I used grey Star Chem Star brite pads, same thing but cheaper.

Just go lightly and have no fear! Worked quickly and I think worked really well on the metal too.

I used warwick wax at the end because that's what i had lying around! I'm really pleased with it.

Be nice to see what happens if any one else fancies a go!

Yes ta Minimo,
you've shown the proof, it works a treat and looks great. Hmm I'm thinking about my US Strat... I've had it for years and the poly still looks so thick and shiny, it's a few years older than my nitro Jazzmaster but looks much much younger.

So, just to be clear, you did this by hand or used a sander with a pad? I'm curious also if you noticed any difference in tone.

Hello mate,
Yeah I tried it both ways but after going with hand I preferred the sander look, better coverage and result too. As for the tone - I changed pups when It was in pieces so I couldn't say. I cant imagine something so small making a difference. Pups and fingers, there's the real tone IMO!

Wow, nice job!
Would doing this improve the resonance of the bass?

Well some people believe that the polyurethane finish common on MIM's affects the tone because it seals the wood. Something like nitrocellulose however would allow the wood to vibrate a little bit more.

The finish is still on there, just took the shine off it. Have noticed no difference at all. Purely a cosmetic change.
