hi, i recently bought a fender geddy lee bass sunburst. it has an awesome tone to it.However i find it to be quite quiet compared to all my other basses. I assume this is becuase it has single coil pick ups.

So does this mean that I cant play it live becuase it will be too quiet?i play in a rock band and bought this bass becuase i thought it would be versatile but it is so quiet. I have raised the pick ups and lowered what was a high action but still quite low volume.

how do i get full volume potential?any tips? i was considering installing stronger pick ups but just worried that would ruin the bass?is pick installation quite common on fender jazz?i dont know. i hope someone can help.

thanks

Andy

Whats your previous bass anyway? if its a humbucker then its definitely a lot mellow..

anyways how about tweaking the gain knob on your amp? there are also some bass boosters..

Look at Tech21 SansAmp Bassdrivers. They will boost your sound so much it's incredible. As well as increasing volume, they act as a tube emulator, you'll get a lot of sounds out of it too.

I've yet to kow anyone who hasn't been satisfied, the make different versions for all applications, and, they have a direct out.

I have a Geddy Lee bass. You just have to get used to adjusting both volume knobs to get different tones. And the tone knob or whatever it's called. I also use a BBE Sonic Stomp in front of the signal, through a Thunderfunk 750A amp with a couple of Dr. Bass cabinets. It pumps perfectly for live. Got a live gig today in 2 hours as a matter of fact. Outdoors. I can't wait to play this Geddy Lee bass live today. Never fear, it'll get loud enough but it depends on your amp a lot as well. Good luck man.

Mesa Amps are another power amp to get you bass up in volume. What are you running your bass through now?

In my opinion the pickups used on the GL are the weakest part of the bass. The output/volume of that bass was way lower then my other jazz basses. I've heard the same from other GL users as well. I even put in a Audere preamp, helped the tone but the output was still way lower than even my passive basses. Needless to say, got rid of it. (I had other issues with the bass in regards to the neck being too thin for my taste)

I would think replacing the pickups with any high end type pickups would help.

i have the same issue....the pub we play at once every couple of weeks has an Ampeg Classic SVT head and 810 cab and with my GL i can barely hear myself using the ampeg rig as my stage monitor.... that rig should blow me off the stage

yet i have loads of volume using my regular Mesa rig??

played the same club last night.. the SVT head was blown so i had to run thru a DI to FOH... signal was so low you couldnt really even hear me... they had to scramble to find a preamp/line driver to run me thru.... never realized how low the O/P was on this GL Jazz until now.... next time i'll take my Mesa head with me!

The Mesa gear really puts out sounds like crazy. Both sound quality, clarity, and just raw bass power. Jazz basses do need a little more push from the amp because of the pup design. Jazz have a great mellow sound. They just don't have the bite and growl of a bass with a humbucking on board.

I don't find the Geddy Lee Jazz that low in pickup signal as mentioned here buy a few. I have a Westone Thunderbass I-A fretless which have a P-bass pickup style. The Bass is active/passive, My other bass is a Cort P-J style. Both are "louder", noticeable but not critically more.
I play with a pick, and the Geddy Lee have this great mid-range which really bites its way through.
I use Sansamp preamp in front of my amp so no problem.
Buy the way, a lower signal is actually nice as the bass will not distort so fast. You can really use preamp overdrive to get this killer tone which is clear and "angry". On basses with high output you get distortion too quick.
The Geddy Lee bass really nail the Geddy Lee sound, as well as quite close to Squire tone. But hey, even the Mew sound is possible (Mew bass player use P-bass) and the Kings of Leon tone (originally Thunderbird). So the bass is quite versatile. Maybe better for the clear and defined tone than the dark and dirty tone.

I think Geddy Lee uses the 60's jazz bass pickups in his bass

My brother plays a Geddy Lee (dead-stock so far as I know).

People out in the parking lot usually have no trouble hearing him......

I honestly love the pickups in the Geddy Lee bass. It's the same ones in the 62 reissue, and you can buy them aftermarket as the "original jazz pickups." They have a really strong high-mid growl, which I suppose is why some people love them and some people don't.

That's my understanding as well. In fact, when I built my brother this '66 Jazz Bass clone as a birthday gift, the CS 62's were the pickups he specified......

Strung with nickel RS66's it's got a nice throaty-and-punchy tone -- a skosh more mellow than the GL with its maple furniture.
