Hi Guys.

Does anyone with a 2008 or later MIA Standard Jazz have their pups set like this?

to me it looks like one is out of alignment. I would say the neck pup is to high. Certainly its top end is higher than the bidge pup. All the other Jazz basse sive owned have had the neck pup's top edge lower thna the bridge pup (as its slightly shorter).
Its gone back but im hoping the shop wont say they are all like this.

Any comments. Im sure its not affecting the tone but for a bass that costs this much i would expect better.

Cheers.

They're all like that, including the old ones. Very nice pickup routing on that bass I must say.

The pics on Fenders website show otherwise.

I've had several MIA and MIM Jazz Basses. They all to best of my recollection, all had straight, evenly placed pups.

Here's hope:
I'm looking at a pic of a '64 Burgundy Mist Jazz Bass owned by Guy Pratt. It happens to be uneven. I'm looking at a pic of Jaco from a Winter 99 Fender Frontline issue(page 7). His fretless' pickups are slightly uneven too. Page 37 shows an American Standard in Sunburst. Same thing. My Squier Jazz is uneven. My Highway 1 Jazz was uneven(and also painted a not so nice baby blue that I never got around to respraying).

If flip's Fender picture was taken directly in front of the pickups you'd also see it was slightly uneven.

I don't know about the Mexican Jazz's Their bridge pickups are the same size as the neck pickups...or were. This could have changed in the last couple years with the recent upgrading.

...wondered at one point about all this, myself.

Cheers Dan.

While i wouldn't expect the strings to be spot on over the pole pieces on both pup i would expect them to be centred with each other.

As i said, my HW1 was fine.

Ive also attached a shot of my CVJ and a MIM 70's Classic i had for a while to show that these are better as well.

On the CVJ the neck pup is shorter than the bridge so both ends of the pup fall just under the ends of the bridge pup. All my previous Jazz style basses have been like this.
With my MIA the top edge of the neck pup is higher than the top edge of the bridge pup, even though the neck pup is slightly shorter. To me thats not right, although i must admit i dont have much experience with MIA's.

I appreciate that taking these shots at a slight angle doesn't help but i have taken measurements as well to prove to myself that something is different with the MIA.

Now, i did manage to mover the pup a few mm and this is what i ended up with. The pickguard was made for a MIA Jazz and when i first put on there was quite a big gap at the bottom end of the pup cut out. This is what made me think it was the pup in the wrong place.
Image
This is what i would expect it to be like. The only problem was the PG would still need altering to allow the pup to move up and down due to the tight fit around the screw holes.
If i had filed it down i would have been left with too much gap and to be honest on a bass this price i shouldn't have to do this work.

Thanks again all for the replies. I just hope i can get this sorted quickly.

Dave.

All I can tell you is the alignment of the strings/pickups is spot on on my '08 Jazz.

Thanks guys.

The shop didnt comment on my bass, but they have sent a replacement one out straight away, after checking it, so hopefully this will be better.

Unfortunately this will be a Black and maple rather than 3TSB but im happy as long as the quality is up to standard.

Really looking forward ot getting it. Ive had to use my Squier CV Jazz and while its a nice bass, its not in the same league as the MIA tone wise IME.

Well the new one arrived and its worse than the one i sent back.
The pups are out of line, there is a large gap around the bridge pup, the neck pup looks like its been jammed in against the PG as there is no movement at one end. And there is an area around the edge of the bridge routing that has no paint on it.

Nice one Fender.
