I spent the last five years wanting a fender bass, and now this day has come. I'm hesitating between an american deluxe jazz bass (4 strings) and a Marcus Miller signature bass. The price is relatively the same. I want to know if the difference between a japanese and an american is significant enough. When I tried them out, the deluxe had old strings and the marcus miller had new strings, so it was kinda hard to tell a difference in the sound. Which one should I buy? By the way, I slap a lot, don't know if it makes a difference...

Buy the American and change the strings.

IMO, if you want to sound close to marcus, ashwood have a rounder snap compared to alder

imho you should always get the best equipment you can justify spending (after you've paid all the bills). research the difference in instruments using the info that's on Fender's site (the info is there so that you can be an informed buyer, after all).

I am just learning bass. I bought the MM Jazz and I love it. The fit and finish was excellent. Only thing I see is that the pickguard where the battery cover meets the rest of the pickguard does not meet smoothly, matching the line of the rest of the guard. I have two other used basses, a 90s Ibanez 5 string and a Music Man 4 string fretless age unknown (bridge was replaced). In learning slap it is the best. As always try before you buy.

Both are high quality. The Deluxe has the graphite reinforcement. I don't think the Marcus does. The Deluxe is a better looking bass imo.

The timeless design of a American Standard Jazz never fails....

AM. Deluxe Series are very durable and well they sound good too..
Marcus Miller Siggy is well a replica which would sound close but not that close since the preamp that Mr Marcus himself is using isn't installed in the Siggy bass

I'd agree with what he just said..
what works for you might not work for others, so try and feel.. when you sit down and play some grooves like for about 20 minutes per bass... whichever you feel or the one that will draw you...

I love the Marcus but if DantheBassist is correct about it not having the graphite reinforcements, and I suspect he is, then I would definitely go for the MIA Deluxe. Especially if the price is the same.

soundwise.. the Marcus sounds way punchy... plus the ashwood... if I'd be doing most of the Marcus Miller covers I'd definitely go with them.. but for all around versatility.. Deluxe are way to go

I agree. I jumped the gun on a MiM jazz and ended up hating it. I wish I had taken more time looking and playing before I bought. Who cares what name is on it if you like it. After all, it's your money and guitar, not theirs.

back then I bought a bass with fret buzz problems.. that was when I didn't know anything about set up and stuff.. but then the best thing to do is try for yourself.. let your hands and ears decide..
