First of all I'll introduce myself. I live in Canada and purchased my bass in 1987 along with a Traynor amp that is also a 1969 model. Friends of mine played in copy bands and I was shown to play a few riffs while the bass player in the band played lead on guitar. When I came across this bass I thought that I would put it away and when the urge struck me I would pick it up. 20 years later I've decided to get it cleaned up and re-strung. I was wondering if there is any way to verify the original finish that the bass had at the time of manufacture. It had been re-finished at some time in it's first 18 years of life. I may not be able to afford the restoration but would still like to know what the original finish was. Here is a couple of pics.

If you send an email, including serial number to Fender they may be able to tell you what the original finish was. My guess is that it was a natural blonde or maple.

Thanks Rockbassist, but I can't seem to find an e-mail address on this site anywhere. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

jediangler,

Check to see if there is any paint left in any of the cavities. If there isn't any paint left at all, then it's your choice as to color. You could try to keep it a 'correct' period color to the late '60's for authenticity. I would venture to guess that it was a sunburst finish. Custom colors were starting to get more popular around this time as well. It depended on whether the dealer ordered them in a 'Custom' color.

The more common colors in the late '60's would be:

- Lake Placid Blue metallic
- Olympic White
- Dakota, Fiesta & Candy Apple Red
- Black
- Sonic Blue

These were also available, but not quite as common:

- Firemist Silver metallic
- Firemist Gold metallic
- Blue Ice metallic
- Charcoal Frost metallic
- Ocean Turquoise metallic
- Teal Green metallic
- Foam Green

Of course, never say never! Any color would have been available for a small upcharge. Again, my guess (vote) would be for a traditional three color Fender sunburst (color number: 00). There were a few other colors, but they were not typically applied to basses. They were 'unique' to a specific instrument.

Thanks hackenbush. I thought that sunburst was the one colour I could eliminate since I have a white pick guard. I don't think I've ever seen a sunburst that didn't have a black pick guard. Any suggestions as to what strings I should put on it?

jediangler,

From the picture the pickguard looks to be original. But it could have been a tortoise guard. W/ Fender never say never as to what combination of colors & parts are used. The odds of it being black in 1969 are slim.

As to strings, Fender makes a wide variety of them. From flats to roundwound. But I like Dean Markley. Their Blue Steel & Super Round Round Wound have always been my choice. Many gauges & materials (nickel or stainless) from both companies. Most players use a 45 -105ga. I use 40-100ga.

I hope this helps.
