I just got my 2010 American Deluxe Jazz in the mail today from musicians friend. I was disappointed right away because the A string had a buzz. It appears the nut was not properly filed, and it is too loose. I was able to get it to stop by adjusting the string retainer. But I will have to eventually get the nut replaced. Did anyone else have this issue, is it common?

But here is my other question, when I plug it into my amp there is a faint crackling noise (hard to describe) that can be amplified by turning up the treble. I am not talking about the typical hum, this is just faint in the background. Is this normal? It doesn't do it when i switch to passive, and I tried another cable, but I use $40 monster cables. I tried another bass with no issues. It doesn't seem to be an issue, as long as it is normal, but I am worried it is a sign of a future problem with the electronics.

I would try replacing the batteries and if that doesn't make any difference, send it back. If you make enough noise they should pay for the return shipping and send you another bass right away. No reason you should be stuck with a lemon right out of the box.

BTW I had a similar problem with an American Deluxe P Bass (buzzing due to an improperly dressed nut). The quality control at Fender has clearly suffered over the last few (really 8-10) years.

I replaced the batteries, but the issue was not resolved. I call musicians Friend, and they issued a replacement, and paid for shipping. Musicians Friend has always treated me right, and is a great company.

I hate going through this, but I think that bass was just a lemon. As soon as I hit the A string and heard that buzz, I was just disgusted. You pay that much more for a deluxe bass, and they can't even dress the nut correctly. I agree about their quality control over the past 5 years. I bought new a 96 American jazz, 99 American p and neither had any issues from factory.

One last thing, the action on the bass was terrible too. Every American Fender I ever bought has always came setup perfect.

My new one will be here Monday.

Unfortunately I think that was the only way to go. I'm still a big fan of Fender Basses (and guitars) but, you have to be careful with what you buy. Let me know how you make out with the new one.

Hi,

First time on Fender Community.
I'm looking to purchase a American deluxe 5 string. So far, I have not played one and I am concerned about getting it direct from Fender without going through a set-up and guitar check, that I assume places like Sweetwater do.. Any recommendations?

I'm pretty sure Sweetwater, Musician's Friend, Sam Ash.... (you name it) none of them set up the instruments before they ship them out. Most stores you go to probably don't either, unless there is a real playability issue.

Sweetwater supposedly does a 55 point check. I had assummed that included setting up or at least checking the set up.

If these outfits don't do checks, it may be quuicker to go through guitar Center and have them ship the bass directly to your residence. GC said that one would get it quicker doing it that way, given the long and delayed waiting times for the Fender JB deluxe 5.

Thanks,
rockydjz

I've had some good basses through Sam Ash.

I can't speak for Sweetwater, but I've received guitars from Musician's Friend that were still sealed in the original Fender box that would have shipped to their warehouse. Fender supposedly sets up the guitars before they ship, but even if they did and then the guitars were set-up again at the retailer, once they were shipped again, there's a good chance they would need to be set-up again anyway.
