Hello,

Thinking of installing a set of EMG JVX pickups in my MIM 60's Jazz Classic Bass. Has anyone installed these pickups & what do you think of them?

I realize that it is up to our own ears to decide what we like but I was looking for some general feedback.

I am looking for classic sound (close) but quiet (no 60 cycle) when single pickup is soloed.

Thanks,
PGBass

IMO.. EMG won't sound like a classic jazz bass.. since most hum cancelling pickups are well sound kinda off..

most EMG pickups are punchy, well that's it... a more "modern" tone to my ears...

If you'd want a vintage tone.. live with the hum..
there are lots of pickups to choose from... however every pickup design has their own idea of "vintage" tone..

Google Ed Friedland EMG for his excellent review on this product.

It's the closest sounding vintage pickup EMG has to offer, but it's still pretty far off. Not nearly enough midrange. The high end is more extended than a vintage.

Here's a link to the above mentioned video review.

You can hear a more accurate vintage tone from his G&L relic bass review and his squier vs fender review where he uses his 64 CS reissue. They're played out of similar rigs, so you can give it an A B comparison.

I've heard positive "sounds vintage" reports on the Dimarzio Area J pickups (hum-canceling).

Seymour Duncan makes some good hum-canceling J pickups as well.

You might search for reviews of the Fender vintage noiseless, SCN, etc.

I don't think Area J's sound vintage at all. SD's are a little better, but not a whole lot. SCN's don't sound vintage at all either.

The problem is that most noise canceling PUP's have a drop in midrange, and vintage pickups are all about the midrange. I'm not saying there is no vintage sounding noiseless pickup, but I have yet to find one.

I haven't heard the Dimarzio Area J's in person, but here are some reviews:

I'm also curious how they would compare to the Seymour Duncan Hot Stack for Jazz (STK-J2) which I am currently using (with 500K v pots)

From all the sound clips I've heard of them, they sound like most hum-canceling "vintage" pickups. It lacks the midrange, particularly in the high mids, to really nail the vintage tone.

@anu
well how about for single coil? what are the pickups that are closest to vintage tone to you?

I have to agree, I haven't found any hum cancelling vintage tone yet.

There's a lot of pickups that have what I consider a pretty vintage tone. They're all a little different, but all pretty similar. There's Nordstrand NJ4, Lindy Fralin, Lollar, G&L, and of course my personal favorite the Fender "Original" pickups (aka 62 reissue aka American Vintage). I don't know which is "most" vintage, but as I said they're all pretty similar. At some level I don't care which is most accurate. For me, I don't really care which is most accurately vintage, I just know what I like.

same, my favorites are both the 62 and the CS 60's, also the antiquity II which give that fat bottom with slightly reduced highs
