The quarter-sized hole under the pickguard on the standard J basses...

What *is* that for? I know the channel is a CNC route - - is the hole an index for the CNC??

Many so called "experts" are speculating but no on has the real straight-from-the factory story.

So what the heck is it?

(and yes, I did do a search before posting - - no joy)

It's used for the CNC machines to identify what shape to cut.

Okay... Not to question anyone's word here - but do you work at Fender?

This has been a topic of debate on TB for a while, with may folks insisting that this whole is indeed a CNC "Key" (which makes sense), while many other insisting that's an absurd, out of date method of manufacture...

I guess what we want is an *authority* to share the straight scoop!
