I read with interest the story of Jaco's bass being recovered and now in the possession of Robert Trujillo. I'm wondering what other players think about this. I feel strongly that he should give the bass to the Pastorius family. The only reason it came into his possession is because it was stolen, and it's safe to assume that had it never been stolen, it would still be in the possession of somebody in the Pastorius family or a museum. Much as I hate to see a vintage instrument sitting in some museum instead of being played, Jaco's bass represents something so much larger in the history of music that it is no longer just a bass, but more of an icon representative of a turning point in the electric bass, and music in general. And honestly, nobody alive can breathe life into that instrument the way Jaco did (sorry Robert). I think having the instrument on display would be a way to keep Jaco's memory alive and inspire new generations of players to excel on their instruments the way he did on his.

According to a story on NOTREBLE DOT COM the "Bass Of Doom" was returned to Mr. Pastorius' family only because Robert Trujillo stepped in to act in their behalf during a court battle that went on for over two years between the Pastorius family and the pawn shop owner who refused to give it back to them. The only reason the family has it back is because Mr. Trujillo reached an out of court "settlement" with the pawn shop owner, which to me sounds like he paid for it.

According to the article on Fender.com, Trujillo is in possession:

"Although Trujillo currently owns the instrument, the Metallica bassist agreed in writing to relinquish the instrument to the family at any time for the same purchase price. According to Bobbing, the family corporation’s liaison to the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton, Trujillo additionally made several other warranties in the purchase agreement rider that completely established that he had the best interests of Jaco and of the Pastorius family in mind."

And this the part I question. He owns it and has possession, and will only release it if they pay him for it. I can't imagine why he's keeping it and requiring payment to let them have it. I also can't figure out why it took a legal battle to get it back. The bass was stolen. The pawn shop owner knew he was in receipt of stolen goods (illegal, last time I checked), and yet, it took a lengthy court battle to get him to release it. And the real mystery: Once the pawn shop relinquished the bass, why didn't it go to Jaco's family right away. It doesn't speak well for the pawn shop owner, the legal system, and in some way for Trujillo. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad he had the time and money to save the bass for the Pastorius family. I just don't understand why he still has it.

I'm not going to lie, I was pleasantly surprised by Trujillo's taste, and it's good to see Jaco's influence extend to Metallica

I totally feel where you're coming from, although there's a small part of me that says that a bass like that should be played! :P

But I do understand the moral implications. If I were him I probably would have given it back.

Looks like he at least had it June 27th, 2010 in Istanbul or at least a copy of it. This video is awful but clearly shows him playing what appears to be the BoD.

I've been doing a lot of searches on this topic. Seems weird he'd buy the bass for himself while claiming he did it for the Pastorius family or on their behalf, all the while retaining possession of the instrument. All that has been said about it that I can find came from Mr. Trujillo.

Another interesting thing is that the shop that had the bass bought it for $400.

Seems the legal wrangling had been going on for two years. That had to cost a fortune in itself.

maybe it's just me... but the pics of his playing it with that Metallica snarl is just sacriligious.... when i think of the BoD i think of Jaco & Weather Report, not Metallica....

The Pastorius family should have this bass.

The BOD shouldn't be used by others in concerts, etc, with the possible exception of some Jaco tribute event.

Speaking of Metallica, it looks like they dig smooth jazz ...
