i think fender should make the fretless precision sting used to play in the late 70s/early 80s, except there probably isnt enough demand for them...so i modified my precision with a fretless neck!

Personally, the whole "artist model" thing is an embarrassment to me. Kid stuff.

I have not bought certain Fender basses I would have otherwise, simply because of the artist-model element. I wanted a '54RI desperately enough that I actually bought a Sting, but that inlay is like a knife in the face every time I look at it. :( I don't think I would gig with it.

Mature, major-act players seem to shy away from artist model basses, too, no doubt for the same reason. Why should they advertise for their competition?

I think Tim deserves one but IMO (!!!) he doesnt need one as i think hes happy with all he has already but does he even mod his basses?
maybe a hipshot detuner on the E string but i dont think there would be anything on the bass that says "Tim Commerford" and make you really want to buy it unlike james jamersons funkmachine...for example.

to name a few:

Andy Bell - Oasis
John Deacon - Queen
Murdoc Niccals - Gorillaz
Roger Waters - Pink Floyd (though preferably Custom Shop only)
Christopher Wolstenholme - Muse
Nate Mendel - Foo Fighters
Chi Cheng - Deftones ****
Simon Jones - The Verve
Guy Berryman - Coldplay

*** deserves one for his fender commitment as perhaps the only metal bassist to only use fenders + would be good to see a metal 5 string fender for a change[/list]

First and foremost, this is a really cool topic on here. I would like to see a James Jamerson funk machine and a James Ross artist model... Fender has covered many artists from country, jazz, and rock why not a jazz bass for a gospel artist?? James plays all types of basses but most of the time he is seen with a jazz bass (usually a marcus miller 4 string or a custom one made for him by Fender) or a jazz style bass (a black modulus jazz bass) as i said all other genres have been covered and most gospel musicians use fender anyway so I think a James Ross artist model would be a good addition to the family

fair point but all depends on if fender thinks they are famous enough for people to recognise them and their bass but also if they had their own signature bass, it would sell as its fenders neck on the line: personally i've never heard of james ross but that's just me in my corner of the world.
