I know that this question sounds a little silly and all, but as a beginner, i was wondering that if i ever wanted to install a pickup gaurd or a thumb rest, can I (or should I ) just drill a hole in my bass, or have a professional install it for me?? Basically, I want to know how its put in....

by pickup guard, do you mean the chrome cover that goes over vintage Fender pickups, ro do you mean the plastic pickguard that lays flat on the bass body?

If it's the chrome cover there are a couple things to consider:
1. Bridge or neck position? Bridge position means there is no pickguard that may get damaged, so just be sure things are lined up and go for it. 2. Neck position means you'll be making a permanent modification to your pickguard, so be sure it's what you really want (or, buy a replacement pick guard just in case)
3. Will modification of your bass drastically change its value? If you've got, say, a newer Standard J Bass then you're not in danger of ruining a future classic, so go ahead and install it. With a very small drill bit (5/64" or smaller if you have it) you can make a small pilot hole just through the finish to avoid cracking. By the way, be sure to make guide marks ahead of time by placing the guard over the pickup and marking the hole points with a pen or marker.

wow thanks a bunch. I think ill just lay off the pickup guards for now...I just got my new j bass a couple of days ago, so i think i'll just keep it the way it is for now. I just got curious because the chrome hardware looked so cool. Well anyways, thanks a bunch. Ill use your advise if i ever feel like i should moify my bass.

You might want to think about the pickup cover a while, but the thumb rest (usually above and parallel to the strings) can be a very helpful addition. Just make it long enough for you to reach near the neck for soft tone and near the bridge for harder tone.
